Meet David Alexander

Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to David Alexander. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.

David, so great to have you with us and we want to jump right into a really important question. In recent years, it’s become so clear that we’re living through a time where so many folks are lacking self-confidence and self-esteem. So, we’d love to hear about your journey and how you developed your self-confidence and self-esteem.

As a musician this is a tough question. I feel that most musicians are insecure about something in their lives, that’s why we make music, hahaha. However, I do believe it is possible to become more confident in your art, as a musician, or in any other form of art.

How I developed my self-esteem in music is by cutting out social media. Turn off the phone, and just make music. It sounds simple enough; however, when you deliberately cut out the noise of the world it becomes much easier to focus on what your art should be, rather that what your art ought to be. It is sometimes disconcerting to hear other musicians on social media sounding one-way, and, perhaps, you might want to imitate that sound primarily because of “trends” and “likes”. This is the fastest way to destroy your creativity, and your self-esteem. Who cares what other people sound like? That has almost nothing to do with you and your music. What you feel in your art, should be true, honest, and genuine to yourself. If all of this lines up then other people will relate, and follow your sound.

Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?

My name is David Alexander, and I’m a songwriter and music producer. I am currently working on a few different projects. I produce Alternative Rock as the artist Nightmare Sunglasses, I produce LoFi music under the name Sleeppyy Doggyy, and I work with very talented people to write songs for Atrium Music – our music licensing company. You can listen to my work on Spotify, Apple Music, Youtube, Instagram and TikTok. Just search @nightmaresunglasses, and @sleeppyydoggyy.

There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?

I think the most important skills are to: learn how to listen, learn about the tools you have and how to use them, and to be confident in what you’re hearing. This all comes with experience, of course, but once you know what you’re listening to it’s easier for you to make decisions.

Okay, so before we go, is there anyone you’d like to shoutout for the role they’ve played in helping you develop the essential skills or overcome challenges along the way?

The people that help me get better are the musician friends I have around me. I have best friends that produce EDM music. I have friends who are amazing singers, guitarists, and mixing engineers. I also have family members who are amazing songwriters. I listen to them, and learn how they go about writing, or producing their music. They provide alternatives to the writing process that I might not have thought of and I think that’s great.
