We recently connected with David Anthony and have shared our conversation below.
Hi David , so great to have you on the platform. There’s so much we want to ask you, but let’s start with the topic of self-care. Do you do anything for self-care and if so, do you think it’s had a meaningful impact on your effectiveness?
There’s never enough “me time” for myself. I’ve always been the one that’s been working majority of my life, because I wanted nice things. There’s days where my body gives up, and I do my best to not let myself give up, and just keep working. It wasn’t until early 2023 where I had my first anxiety attack at work, and that was scary for me. I felt like there was a lot of things going on at work, and everything was just coming at me.
I didn’t know what to do, but my cousin just told me to go outside and take a breather. That helped a lot. Months go by, and I decided to do more vacationing for myself, and to get out of work. Literally it’s the best thing I could have ever done. For self-care, I always put myself first before others, and I just think positive things. I always say what you perceive to the world is what you receive back. Be kind to people, and positive things will come.
I recommend loving yourself more, and not letting negativity consume you. You should always have time for yourself, and you should always appreciate yourself.
Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?
My name is David Anthony Villalva, but I go by David Anthony for my photography brand. I decided to use my middle name more often now, since it suits well with my photography name. It was hard for people to pronounce my last name, so I decided to go with my middle name Anthony.
David Anthony Photo is my photography name. My main goal is have my very own photo studio, so I can have other creatives rent out, and create their own photography work. I’ve evolved throughout my photography career, and now I can say I’ve gotten so much better. I always knew simplicity goes a long way, and I’ve been sticking to my little rule ever since.
I’ve also been thinking about publishing my own photography book, so others can learn tips and tricks of my lighting techniques.
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
Simplicity, Lighting, and Aesthetic.
Simplicity goes long way, light is your main source, and creativity must be brought to the table.
I advice for new upcoming photographers, to just go out and keep taking photos. Practice makes perfect, and it doesn’t matter what field of photography as well. Whenever I had free time, I take my camera, and drive around places to take photographs. It’s also great to get out of the house, and see what mother nature has in store for you.
What do you do when you feel overwhelmed? Any advice or strategies?
Take a breather, and have a rest day. Do yourself a favor and give yourself me time. Your hard work will pay off at the end. Always remember mental health. Put yourself first.
