We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful David Arreguin. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with David below.
Hi David , so great to have you on the platform. There’s so much we want to ask you, but let’s start with the topic of self-care. Do you do anything for self-care and if so, do you think it’s had a meaningful impact on your effectiveness?
As a personal injury and consumer attorney, I’ve come to understand the critical importance of self-care in a profession where the well-being and rights of individuals are at the forefront. The inherent stress that accompanies advocating for others and juggling multiple deadlines at a time has led me to prioritize my physical and mental well-being.
During law school, I recognized the toll that a sedentary lifestyle was taking on my health, especially given the demanding nature of my studies. Due to the strain on my body from juggling work and school while also sustaining a back injury while working out, I found myself in a debilitated physical condition. Despite facing this challenge during a crucial period in my career, I chose to confront it head-on and proactively address the injuries. I consciously reintroduced exercise into my routine, not merely as a recreational outlet but as a necessity to cope with the rigorous academics and mitigate the effects of prolonged sitting. Navigating the uncertainties of COVID-19 while preparing for the California Bar Exam added an extra layer of stress to an already demanding curriculum. In response, I sought solace in activities like taking on juggling, especially during times when outdoor activities and gym access were restricted.
Maintaining mental clarity is not just a personal goal but a professional imperative. Recognizing that my effectiveness as an attorney is directly linked to my ability to navigate stress and challenging situations, I prioritize self-care practices, including stress-relief techniques, as essential tools. In the office, I incorporate stretching, short walks, and activities like juggling not just as breaks but as integral elements to maintain composure and focus when dealing with the complexities of personal injury and consumer cases.
Outside the office, routinely engaging in sports like tennis and basketball has become more than a recreational pursuit. Over the past three years, I made a deliberate choice to enlist the services of a tennis coach, viewing it not merely as an expense but as a strategic investment in establishing a robust routine. In basketball, I’ve built a professional network for regular games, recognizing the vital impact of exercise on our professional lives. These activities serve as essential components of my self-care routine, offering not just physical fitness but a means of releasing the accumulated stress that often accompanies handling my caseload.
In a field as demanding as civil litigation, juggling work and personal life is a must. This equilibrium is not just a luxury but a necessity. It allows me to cherish moments with my wife, bond with my family, enjoy the company of friends, and indulge in enriching travel experiences, ensuring a well-rounded and fulfilling life beyond the legal arena.
In essence, self-care is not just a consideration but a strategic investment in my well-being, directly impacting my effectiveness in advocating for the rights and well-being of those I represent. As I often say, “Don’t juggle it” — don’t juggle self-care and prioritize it intentionally, acknowledging its role in maintaining health and resilience.
Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?
In my journey at Banker’s Hill Law Firm, A.P.C., being a lawyer is more than just a job—it’s a commitment to facing challenges and securing justice in the courtroom. My primary focus lies in personal injury law, where we act as advocates for those who have suffered injuries due to someone else’s fault. In this space, we navigate the complexities of recovery, ensuring our clients receive not only legal support but also assistance and rightful compensation following accidents.
Additionally, my focus extends to consumer law, particularly in cases involving defective vehicles, commonly known as lemon law cases. In these cases, we actively seek damages from the vehicle manufacturer on behalf of our clients who have experienced significant issues with a “lemon” vehicle that has undergone repeated unsuccessful repairs.
Within the dynamic field of legal practice, I find joy in the marketing and business scene. Crafting engaging videos, and social media content, and participating in TV interviews are the fun aspects of my law practice. For a firsthand look, explore the action on Instagram @davidarresq—a dynamic tour through the legal realm with a hint of humor in the legal hustle. The idea is to shake up the image of what a modern attorney is all about, making lawyers more approachable. And yes, every now and then, you might catch me juggling!
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
Reflecting on my journey, I recognize the transformative impact of actively participating in the hustle, confronting fears, and seeking guidance from connections. Facing discomfort head-on has been a source of growth for me. The advice for those starting: embrace continuous learning and face your fears.
Who has been most helpful in helping you overcome challenges or build and develop the essential skills, qualities or knowledge you needed to be successful?
I want to emphasize the support and continuous learning received from Maxwell Agha, our Principal Attorney, and the dedicated staff at the firm—from the days before law school up to the present. Maxwell’s remarkable legal expertise has served as a guide, offering insights that have profoundly influenced my professional development.
Adding to this is the unwavering encouragement from my wife, Carolina, a pivotal force in my journey since my pre-law school days. Her support plays a major role in continuing to shape my path.
Moreover, the invaluable contribution of my parents, who provided me with a private education, stands as a cornerstone of my achievements.
