We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful David Atkins. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with David below.
David, thanks so much for taking the time to share your insights and lessons with us today. We’re particularly interested in hearing about how you became such a resilient person. Where do you get your resilience from?
I developed my resilience starting at a very young age watching my mother support and raise two young boys after the death of my father. My other siblings had already progressed from the nest. Experiencing her courage, persistence and consistency inspired me over the years to model the behavior in which I positively benefitted. I knew my mother’s world had changed and she was gracefully figuring out how to navigate this new space all while her two youngest boys were watching and making life choices based on everything they were exposed to.
Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?
I am an intentional collaborator with a results-orientated focus that enhances whatever I choose to give time and energy to. I have an earned Bachelor’s degree in Decision Science from George Mason University where I have a 35+ year relationship as student, alumni, employee, donor, and fundraiser. I am currently the Executive Director of Brand Development and Licensing at my undergraduate alma mater. I also have a Master’s degree in Theology from Howard University where I decided to accept my calling to the ministry. My passion lies in inspiring young minds to achieve greatness, a mission that brings me peace. I recently co-published a book titled “Awareness Put Me On” which garnered Amazon bestselling status in six different categories. While the book has several amazing stories, for me, it was necessary to share my story to begin turning some life pages and preparing myself for the next chapters of my life.
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
Perseverance. Restoration. Patience.
Stay focus on your goal and be open to modifying the goal and adjusting where the goal post stands.
Take care of yourself and be aware of what your personal needs are in order to thrive. Take breaks as needed!
Everything takes some time, don’t rush the race. Celebrate the small wins as much as the big ones along the way.
Looking back over the past 12 months or so, what do you think has been your biggest area of improvement or growth?
What an amazingly reflective question! It really has been the releasing of negative energy that I had been physically harnessing for years. Now with the initial release of said energy, I am more aware and able to identify negative energy and respond to it more readily. Life is too short not to live the best life possible! And personally, I don’t care to bare the burdens of others’ shortcomings.
