We recently connected with David Ayotunde and have shared our conversation below.
Hi David, appreciate you sitting with us today to share your wisdom with our readers. So, let’s start with resilience – where do you get your resilience from?
Drawing inspiration from my background where I was taught to be focused and persistent in everything I do, the people I have ahead of me in this field the raw and malleable nature of metal itself, my resilience as a metal sculpture artist originates from the challenges I faced growing up, doggedness and persistence kept me going. Just as I forge metal into art, I’ve transformed adversity into strength, allowing every obstacle to shape my artistic journey and contribute to the unique narrative embedded in my creations.
Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?
I am a sculpture artist, I work mainly with metal. I love working with metal in a unique way. I’ve been enthralled by the alchemy of change from metal to sculptural pieces and seeing the intensity of modeling with clay, holding the angle-grinder, hammer, or the torch of light reflecting on the object that I have created. It is fully engaging. I aim to create sculptural pieces that force the attention of the viewers, and actively engage you with the uniqueness of their form, texture, and aliveness. and that gives me joy that can not be matched
My Art works has basically been about my philosophy towards my society at large, that Art should be used as agent of change and also a tool of social review. Making use of metal washer recently, both old and new, and little of metal junks. My goal is to pass message to the public from the experience I have gathered from my society so far. And also reengineering and protest against environmental decadence, and to address the issue of waste management and the need to repurpose and reuse the large waste that makes our environment unsightly and affecinly with metal.
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
Reflecting on my sculptor artist journey, three crucial aspects stand out:
1. Creative Vision: Cultivating a distinct artistic voice. Know what you want to express and develop a unique style that sets your work apart. Let your creations tell a story that resonates with your personal narrative.
2. Persistence and Passion: It must have been well understood that Sculpture demands dedication. Staying passionate about my craft, and persisting through challenges are very necessary and have helped me a lot. Passion fuels the long hours of sculpting and the continuous quest for improvement.
3. Networking Community and Learning from People Ahead: Engaging with the artistic community. Attending events, collaborating with other artists, and sharing my works. Networking not only opens doors but also provides invaluable insights and support.
Advice for beginners: Nurture your creativity, be tenacious in pursuing your art, and actively participate in the artistic community. Submit yourself to learning from the people who are ahead of you, embrace every opportunity for growth, and never underestimate the power of passion in sculpting a fulfilling artistic career.
One of our goals is to help like-minded folks with similar goals connect and so before we go we want to ask if you are looking to partner or collab with others – and if so, what would make the ideal collaborator or partner?
Absolutely, I’m open to collaborative opportunities. I’m particularly interested in connecting with art collectors, galleries, and art workshop organizations. If you share a passion for unique and thought-provoking sculptures, let’s collaborate to bring artistic visions to life.
