Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to David Barmer Jr. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
David , so excited to have you with us today. So much we can chat about, but one of the questions we are most interested in is how you have managed to keep your creativity alive.
Getting out and living, theres so much beauty in the world. Im Constantly pushing myself to find inspiration in everyday things, Learning new skills, and working alongside people who have different creative processes. I’ve been putting myself in situations where i’m constantly challenged to think outside the box and improvise which has helped me grow a lot as a creative as well as a person. Im also blessed to know and be surrounded by so many creative and talented people who inspire me.
Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?
My name is David Barmer Jr, Im a photographer and creative director who specializes in film and digital photography.
My goal with my photography is to capture moments, tell a story through my images, and invoke a feeling in the viewer. My goal with creative direction is to bring my clients vision to life and give it structure
What makes photography so special to me is that you can tell a story through one or a series of photos, You can make people feel something, and can create a brand new perspective of an event.
For me, whats fun about creative direction is that you get to help someone bring their vision to life, build on it and work with them to give it structure. a lot of people struggle with coming up with ideas so being able to help others with that makes me pretty happy
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
First would be just being a good person, first impressions mean everything. when working with a lot of first time clients how you are as a person is a major factor in determining if they wanna work with you again. Being kind, professional, and making who you’re working with feel comfortable is extremely important.
next is technical understanding, you gotta know what you’re doing and how to get the shot you want, having a good understanding of aperture, Iso, shutter speed, and composition is extremely important.
Lastly, networking! building good relationships leads to opportunities in the future not only for yourself but for others and is almost always gonna put you in a position for success
My advice to creatives just starting out is to be kind, ask questions, get a good understanding of how your camera works, how light works, experiment, network, and most importantly have fun!
Before we go, any advice you can share with people who are feeling overwhelmed?
Pray, think about when I started, where I am now, the work I put in, and that its ok to not have everything figured out or to not meet the expectations/goals you set out for yourself right away. Rome wasn’t built in a day. There’s high and lows just keep pushing and enjoy the process it’ll all pay off in the end
