Meet David Bounichou

We were lucky to catch up with David Bounichou recently and have shared our conversation below.

Hi David, really happy you were able to join us today and we’re looking forward to sharing your story and insights with our readers. Let’s start with the heart of it all – purpose. How did you find your purpose?

My purpose came from a lifelong passion for the NHL and the NBA. I discovered both leagues in the late 90s and they quickly became a part of my identity. Years later, I created db_ice_hoops, a place where I could express that passion. What began as a simple way to share my jersey collection and the history behind each franchise slowly grew into something deeper. With time, I realized how much I loved creating visuals and researching stats, stories and moments from the game, and sharing all of it with fans around the world.

Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?

I run db_ice_hoops as a passion project alongside my full-time job working for the local administration in Switzerland. What started as a simple way to share my love for the NHL and NBA has grown into something much more meaningful for me. Today, I focus on creating sports content that mixes visual creativity with research, stats, and franchise history — all the things I’ve always loved about these leagues.

I enjoy digging into numbers, learning the stories behind teams and players, and finding ways to present that information in a visual format that fans from all over the world can connect with. I also write articles for Slapshot Magazine (a french-language hockey magazine), which allows me to explore hockey culture in even more depth and share that passion with a wider audience.

What excites me most about db_ice_hoops is the balance between creativity and research. I love imagining concepts for each franchise, developing visuals, and giving fans a different way to experience the sport. My goal is simply to celebrate hockey and basketball in a way that feels authentic, fun, and engaging. That’s what motivates me to keep building this project.

Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?

Curiosity helped me learn more about the NHL and NBA — stats, history, teams and stories. I always wanted to understand things better.

Consistency helped me grow my page. Even when life is busy, I try to keep creating and improving a little bit at a time.

And passion is what keeps everything moving. I love sports, visuals, and sharing this with fans around the world.

My advice for people who are just starting is simple : Stay curious, keep practicing even when progress feels slow, and let your passion guide you. When you enjoy what you do, learning and improving becomes much easier !

What is the number one obstacle or challenge you are currently facing and what are you doing to try to resolve or overcome this challenge?

The biggest challenge for me right now is time. I work full time at the city hall, I try to spend as much time as possible with my son and my darling, I try to stay active for my charity project Sweat2Help and I also work on improving my English every day. With all that, finding enough hours for db_ice_hoops can be difficult.

I try to manage it by working day-by-day, creating when I can, and keeping the process simple. I focus on enjoying the research, the stats, and the visual ideas, even if I can’t post every day. It keeps the passion alive without pressure.

Even with a busy schedule, I stay open to future collaborations. If one day an NHL or NBA franchise wants a French-language page or another creative project, I would be happy to talk about it when the time is right.
