We recently connected with David “dj Chuck T” Thrower and have shared our conversation below.
Hi David “DJ Chuck T” Thrower, we’re so appreciative of you taking the time to share your nuggets of wisdom with our community. One of the topics we think is most important for folks looking to level up their lives is building up their self-confidence and self-esteem. Can you share how you developed your confidence?
I developed confidence and self esteem from consistently working on perfecting my craft and honing my skills. The better I got, the more confident I became. The more skilled I became, the better I felt about myself. In order to achieve greatness you have to practice like a beginner.
Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?
I’ve been in the music industry for 23 years, starting out as an artist. I transitioned away from being a performing artist around 2003/2004 and since then, I’ve explored various facets of the industry, including artist management, studio engineering, music production, and even spent a few years as a radio personality, where I also handled commercial and ad production. During my time in radio, I developed a passion for DJing, fascinated by how DJs could control the crowd and set the mood for any situation. The artform and the extensive music knowledge required intrigued me, so I bought a set of cheap turntables and taught myself how to DJ. Now, 19 years later, I’m still rocking parties and music festivals, having earned over 45 awards for DJing at 43 years old.
Throughout my journey, I noticed that many creatives struggled with the business side of the industry, often making poor decisions due to a lack of educational resources. To address this, I built a curriculum and started a music business course called The Foundation of Music. Since 2018, I’ve taught over 400 music creators and aspiring music executives the ins and outs of the music business. In 2020, I partnered with the Charlotte Hornets to launch the NBA’s first-ever Music Industry Night. The event is a music conference and conference rolled into one and we do it at the Spectrum Center on game day.
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
The 3 qualties that have made me successful in my career are resiliance, having an undying thrist for knowledge and being able to adapt to change. These are the key to success in any business but in the music business its a must!
All the wisdom you’ve shared today is sincerely appreciated. Before we go, can you tell us about the main challenge you are currently facing?
The number one obstalce I face of the daily basis is that most people in the music industry are more focused on entertaining rather than education. That’s why everyone from Taylor Swift to Kanye West have been locked in bad record deals. By now it should be common knowledge that most lables and publishing companies will offer music creators horrible contract terms in their initial proposal but artists and producers keeping signing them. Its like the cycle never stops. I try by best to educate artists with my music business classes and seminars but they’re more concerned with the popularity aspect of going viral or having a hit record rather than actually making money off of going viral or having a hit record.
