We were lucky to catch up with David Ford recently and have shared our conversation below.
David, so good to have you with us today. We’ve got so much planned, so let’s jump right into it. We live in such a diverse world, and in many ways the world is getting better and more understanding but it’s far from perfect. There are so many times where folks find themselves in rooms or situations where they are the only ones that look like them – that might mean being the only woman of color in the room or the only person who grew up in a certain environment etc. Can you talk to us about how you’ve managed to thrive even in situations where you were the only one in the room?
To be effective and successful in those moments, I focus on being useful — deeply useful. No matter where you are, indispensability is a virtue. That means becoming a subject matter expert not just in the obvious areas, but in things most people overlook. When you know what others don’t, you become respected, reliable, and—often—favored.

Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?
At the heart of it all is a desire to own my time and pour 110% of that freedom back into my family. I’ve never felt closer to achieving that goal than I do today — and that’s what excites me most.
My media brand is the engine that allows me to connect with a global audience, tell meaningful stories, and spark conversations that matter. At the same time, my work in IT has empowered me to broaden my family’s horizons — giving us the flexibility to live and thrive just about anywhere.
As for what’s new, I’m currently focused on growing my community. Back in April, I had just 20,000 followers. Today, I’m approaching the 80K mark — even with a few setbacks along the way. My next milestone is 100K, and I’m more determined than ever to get there.

There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
1. Develop a Core Skill
We’re all dreamers — we imagine a version of life where everything works out just the way we want. But reality doesn’t always play fair. That’s why you need a core, essential skill — something that anchors you and places you closer to your goals, even when the path isn’t linear. That might mean going to college, picking up a trade, or getting involved in a field with long-term value.
The biggest mistake I’ve seen fellow dreamers make is forcing themselves to stick with things that no longer make them happy and don’t pay the bills. Your foundation has to be practical, not just aspirational.

2. Use Your Dream Superpower
Everyone — and I mean everyone — has a hidden talent or gift that, when nurtured, can lead to something impactful. That impact might not always show up as money or fame. Sometimes you’re the catalyst for someone else’s growth. Sometimes you pioneer something new.
For me, that superpower is creativity. It’s been tested, stretched, and redefined through every season of my life. Ironically, I’ve made my biggest creative leap during the time in life when I’ve had the least time. I didn’t quit when old methods stopped working — I adapted. Your superpower has to evolve with you.
⸻
3. Never Stop Learning
Both your core skill and your superpower need sunlight — meaning exposure, knowledge, and refinement. Stay curious. Keep learning. Challenge yourself. Experiment. That’s the only way to stay sharp and relevant as you grow.

One of our goals is to help like-minded folks with similar goals connect and so before we go we want to ask if you are looking to partner or collab with others – and if so, what would make the ideal collaborator or partner?
Teamwork and networking have the power to accomplish incredible things. Ideally, I want to build something I have creative control over — something that reflects my vision while still being inclusive and empowering to those I work with.
At the same time, I recognize that not every venture will be mine to steer alone, and that’s okay. If I’m stepping into a partnership, what matters most to me is mutual respect, fair treatment, and shared commitment to putting in the work. I want to build with people who value transparency, consistency, and genuine collaboration.
If that sounds like you, let’s connect.
