Meet David Grossmann

Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to David Grossmann. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.

David , so excited to have you with us today. So much we can chat about, but one of the questions we are most interested in is how you have managed to keep your creativity alive.

Keeping a sense of purpose in each day helps to keep my creativity alive. As an artist, and I think this can be true of any job, my work can easily become too much of my focus. I am grateful that this work is something I deeply love, grateful every time that I step into my studio. But my main purpose in each day is to love God and to love people. So when I step into my studio, I try to keep that in mind, and try to remember that what the world around me needs is that love, whether it comes through a painting that I make or through being involved in my family and in our community.

On most of my working days I take a break to go for a run. The time outdoors re-fuels my creativity and helps me to refocus on a larger idea of how I might fit into the world.

Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?

David Grossmann explores the space between nature and the inner landscape of perception and contemplation, intuition and memory. Through the use of imagery that captures the passage of time, he attempts to convey the fragile balance of the environment and the patterns of loss and renewal that play out in the natural world. His paintings take shape in a slow progression that allows each to become a meditative, reverent space.

Grossmann was born in Colorado and raised in South America amid the Atacama Desert and the Andes Mountains. There he gained an early awareness of nature’s fragile balance. And, over those formative years growing up between cultures and languages, his bent toward introspection deepened. The inner and outward landscapes of place and culture are themes he continues to explore through landscapes that blur the lines between reality and introspection.

He now lives in Colorado, USA, where he, his wife, and their two children are frequently visited by herds of deer and the many birds that wander through their yard.

If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?

My journey as an artist started early because of the encouragement of my family. I think every artist (and who isn’t an artist in some way?) needs an encouraging environment, and often we need to foster this for ourselves.

Value what came before you. Study art history and find the artists in different time periods whose work speaks to your soul.

Find mentors. Look for artists who are willing to open their lives to you. Starting out can feel impossible, but many people have found ways to balance making art and making a living.

If you knew you only had a decade of life left, how would you spend that decade?

Finding a balance as a father of two (my son is almost three years old and my daughter is four months old) with the rest of life is an ongoing, lovely, and messy challenge.
