We recently connected with David Jordan Jr and have shared our conversation below.

David, thanks for taking the time to share your lessons with our community today. So, let’s jump right in – one of the most essential skills for unlocking our potential is self-discipline. Where does your self-discipline come from?
My self discipline comes from the way my parents raised me and from the life experiences I have either had myself or witnessed take place with other people in this world, both from the past and the present. As a young child my mother and father always told me the importance of investing the time into whatever I am doing to yield the results which I am seeking to obtain. When I began school in kindergarten, I understood the importance of work, doing great work and putting forth my best effort in all of the activities which I participated in as a young student. When I came home from school, before I could go outside to play with my friends, I had to complete my homework first; and the homework had to be completed correctly. This type of reinforcement from my parents enabled me to understand the importance of handling work before play. When I began playing the game of basketball in the second grade, the same measures were in place for me. I knew that for me to play basketball after I got home from school, I first had to complete my homework, projects and any additional studies before I would play. After a while, that self discipline was in me and my parents didn’t have to tell me to do my homework or do my best. As I continued my studies through middle school, high school, college, graduate school and post graduate school, the self discipline which I’ve had for myself enabled me to have the opportunities for success. I’ve been able to be a scholar student due to self-discipline, sacrifice and a commitment to being the best person I can be. Self-discipline as the Editor In Chief of ESHE Magazine INC. ™ has enabled me to take something that started as an idea to a platform that is global. The standard was set for me at a very early age and it has had a profound effect on my life as a scholastic student, then a student athlete, as a professional athlete and also as a professional in the worlds of media, education and business.

Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?
I’m the Editor In Chief of ESHE Magazine INC. ™, an international digital publication. ESHE Magazine INC. ™ was founded in 2014 to be a light in the world. ESHE means life in Egyptian. ESHE shines a light on all of the great things people are doing globally in the areas of education, medicine, fashion, sports, entertainment and technology. ESHE also prioritizes history and those that contribute to history both past and present from a perspective based style of writing and informing. The priority of ESHE Magazine INC. ™ is factual information and allowing the stories to be told by those that were apart of it or made it happen in any type of capacity. No story can be truer from anybody than the person or people that were apart of it with first hand experience. Exclusive interviews, historical content and rare content allows ESHE Magazine INC. ™ to educate and inform the world in a unique way.

If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
Patience, perseverance and my faith in GOD are three things that have been the most impactful in my life journey. Patience is essential to anything that you are seeking to achieve in life. Everybody wants to get to the destination immediately, but being patient along the way will enable you to learn, become wiser and also appreciate the end goal once it’s attained. Perseverance will define any person; being able to withstand everything that comes your way, while still making steps forward to your goal is what perseverance is all about. Many people quit when things get hard and difficult; it’s those that persevere through the storms, trials and tribulations that shine like a diamond at the end. Quitting is not an option when you have goals you want to achieve. My faith in GOD has carried me throughout my life. I live by the scripture II Corinthians 5:7, “For we walk by faith and not by sight.” I’ve had many times in my life where things on paper and in reality seemed as if they would not get better or workout for me, but I always have believed they would and I trusted GOD to bring it to pass. Every time, things have worked out for me greater than I could have ever envisioned.

My advice to any person that is at the beginning of their journey is to take everything one day at a time. You must understand the importance of believing in what you are doing, even when other don’t. Always know that hard work, perseverance and patience will help you tremendously, even if you don’t realize it at the time. One of my friends, the late Ahmaad Galloway always told me “Don’t have dreams, have goals!” Dreams seem far away, goals are right in front of you.
