Meet David Méndez Mateu

Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to David Méndez Mateu. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.

Alright, so we’re so thrilled to have David with us today – welcome and maybe we can jump right into it with a question about one of your qualities that we most admire. How did you develop your work ethic? Where do you think you get it from?
My work ethic is deeply rooted in two essential elements: the invaluable lessons passed down by my father and my unwavering passion for what I do. From an early age, my father instilled in me the importance of hard work, dedication, and the relentless pursuit of excellence. His example served as a guiding light for our family, demonstrating the transformative power of effort and commitment.

Additionally, my passion for Costume Design fuels my work ethic. When you’re truly passionate about your craft, every task becomes an opportunity for growth and fulfillment. I find genuine pleasure and motivation in pushing myself to the limit, constantly seeking to improve and innovate.

In essence, my work ethic is a fusion of external guidance and internal drive, shaping me into the dedicated professional I am today.

Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?
Costume design is, without a doubt, one of the most exhilarating professions out there. It’s all about bringing characters to life through what they wear on screen. However, to truly excel in our craft, we delve deep into the intricacies of the story and its characters. This involves extensive research into the setting, time period, economic backdrop, and social circumstances. Whether it’s exploring the nuances of the past, dissecting the complexities of the present, or imagining the possibilities of the future, every project is a fascinating journey into uncharted territory.

What makes our job truly thrilling is the opportunity to interpret the director’s vision and breathe life into it through our designs. While a story may be rooted in history, the director may have a specific element they want to accentuate, challenging us to think creatively and push the boundaries of conventional costume design.

One of the most rewarding aspects of our work is the diverse array of people we encounter with each project. Every collaboration introduces us to new perspectives, cultures, and ideas, enriching our creative process and expanding our horizons.

In essence, costume design is a dynamic blend of artistry, research, and collaboration, where every project presents a fresh set of challenges and opportunities. It’s a profession that constantly evolves, ensuring that no two days are ever the same and that creativity knows no bounds.

There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
When reflecting on my journey as a costume designer, three key skills stand out as particularly impactful. Firstly, my ability to adapt quickly to the preferences and working styles of various directors and collaborators has been instrumental. Understanding their vision, communication style, and approach to the creative process has allowed me to seamlessly integrate my work into each project and ensure a cohesive outcome.

Secondly, my dedication to thorough research and interpretation has been a cornerstone of my creative process. Delving deep into the story’s context, historical background, and thematic elements enables me to develop informed and innovative costume designs. By studying source materials and exploring my own artistic interpretations through sketching, I’m able to breathe life into characters in a way that resonates authentically with the narrative.

Lastly, my ability to think quickly on my feet and problem-solve under pressure has been invaluable. In the fast-paced world of costume design, unexpected challenges are par for the course. Being able to assess situations rapidly and devise effective solutions ensures that productions stay on track and that creative visions are realized, even in the face of adversity.

What was the most impactful thing your parents did for you?
The most important thing my parents did for me was to expose me to travel from a very young age. Those trips weren’t just vacations; they were transformative experiences that opened my eyes, ignited my imagination, and cultivated my creativity. Exploring different cultures, landscapes, and perspectives enriched my understanding of the world and fueled my passion for creativity. Each journey sparked new ideas and inspirations, shaping me into the creative person I am today. I’m grateful to my parents for instilling in me a love for adventure and discovery, as it has profoundly influenced my personal and professional growth
