Meet David Norwood

We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful David Norwood. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with David below.

David , we’re so excited for our community to get to know you and learn from your journey and the wisdom you’ve acquired over time. Let’s kick things off with a discussion on self-confidence and self-esteem. How did you develop yours?
Confidence and self-esteem. Two sides of the same coin. That coin is called clarity. Clarity is my source code for self-esteem and confidence. When I have achieved clarity in; what I’m doing, why I’m doing it, where is “it” coming from, I have and endless supply of confidence which fuels my self-esteem. You can draw a straight line from lack of clarity to lack of confidence and self-esteem. We all have the exact proportion of confidence in relationship to our clarity of vision that we need.

Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?

Atlanta based choreographer, teacher and film director, David Norwood is a well known and influential artist and educator
in the dance community world wide. Considered a ‘unique renegade artist’ David’s work can be seen across all mediums, including stage , screen, television and streaming.

One of David’s drivers is creating new ideas and concepts and seeing them come to fruition. Not satisfied with the status quo , David is always finding ways to push the envelope in the idea department and remixing not only the music but the production itself. Much sought after for his ideation and branding campaigns, David now is CEO of his own production company NYH media. His goal is to create a multi-media platform that pushes the art of dance performance and education to the next level and contribute to the next evolution of performance and training.

Mr. Norwood has two dance styles: JazzTripHop which is a commercial based style of choreography & THR3AD: a hybrid of contemporary and tai chi which focuses on bringing the mover into a flow state

Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
Three Impactful Qualities

1. Seeing the bigger picture: As a director and choreographer, being able to ‘zoom out’ and see the overall vision of the project has served me well in refining the details and the courage to create a world within a world for the audience

2. Immersion: If it weren’t for all those years of dancing up to 6 hours a day, I would not have the tenacity and fortitude to see current projects to their fruition. Cultivating grit through immersing oneself is something everyone can do. The main thing is to outwork luck and doubt to get where you want to go.

3. Writing: Writing is the superpower for all artists and for those who are artistic. I don’t mean having a perfectly crafted and well punctuated style, I mean having a style that is perfect for you. If you can write out your art, you can create anything. I would advise all artists to write everyday ( even for 5 min ), it is the creative shovel that helps you dig deep into your genius.

How would you describe your ideal client?
I am looking for elegant renegades. The ones who are open minded and are willing to push the envelope. My ideas stem from a hyper-reality base and I am about unconventional creativity
