Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to David Posey. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
David , looking forward to learning from your journey. You’ve got an amazing story and before we dive into that, let’s start with an important building block. Where do you get your work ethic from?
Work ethic is a belief that work and diligence have a moral benefit and an inherent ability, virtue, or value to strengthen character and individual. From a very early age, I was literally a workaholic. I actually started my own lawn mowing business at age 7. By age 13 I was on my journey towards a career in the construction industry. I started out working summers with a construction company my father worked for at the beginning. Those summers were both long & very hot especially in Florida. But I was able to learn so much so quickly at a young age. By 18-19 years old, I was running a structural framing crew for a small family-owned company in Central Florida. I’ve always taken tremendous pride in being the best at anything I set out to do. My belief is to lead by example. I have always felt that speed is a by-product of efficiency. Not the other way around. We came up lower middle class, so I always believed that if I worked harder than the rest, my kids would have a much better childhood than mine. My father & I started our own construction company with $10,000 that was saved up at age 20 in late 1999 & never looked back. By 2003, we had over 135 employees! To this day I still wake up early every morning & push myself as hard as possible. Because I know that tomorrow is never promised, & I can lose everything I’ve worked so hard for in the blink of an eye. So many folks lose sight of that.
Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?
We have owned & operated Posey Contracting Group LLC. for almost 25 years now! Time flies when you’re having fun! Our work has been featured throughout the industry on a wide variety of fronts. We take such a tremendous amount of pride in every facet of our industry. We are trendsetters, not impersonators! We are a true custom building contracting company. We custom design & build each one of our projects in-house here. We have built so many projects of various sizes, scopes, & complexity levels over the years. Builds from under $100,000 to several million dollars. We treat each project & client with the same level of attention & utmost respect. We build each project as if it were our own. We do not believe in taking shortcuts or cutting corners. Our clients can rest assured that their build is being constructed by the best hands in the industry. We are very selective about the projects we take on. It’s important that both the client & contractor are a good fit to ensure a proper quality product. We refuse to take on projects just to simply turn a dollar like so many others. When we put our name on something it is a seal of quality, excellence, & authenticity like no other. We will 100% put our work up against anybody’s industry! We are that confident in what we produce here at Posey Contracting Group LLC.
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
Great question! Early on mastering structural framing was such a valuable asset & tool. It is a critical component of construction. It is essentially one of the most important aspects of building a home or commercial building. Every other element of the building is pretty much tied to framing in some capacity or another. I’ve actually built some of the most incredible staircases & conventional frame roof systems in the game bar none! So challenging yet so rewarding! Secondly, I would say business management was a very important element in my career. Early on I actually dropped out of college & pursued my dream of owning a construction company. Such an important part of business management in my world was learned early on the hard way. Simply put trial & a lot of errors! Quite honestly I wouldn’t change it for the world looking back now. It helped mold me to have such an understanding and appreciation for the business world & all that comes with it. Last but certainly not least, I would say that client management or managing expectations is paramount. So often folks are misled or given false narratives in the construction industry. It gives our industry such a bad look. We take a totally different approach with our company. Instead of telling clients what they want to hear, we prefer to tell them what they need to hear. We believe in being honest & upfront with our clients we give them truthful information & realistic direction with their projects. We can’t tell you how many clients over the years have come to us at the conclusion of their builds & said thank you for providing us with the guidance we needed but didn’t necessarily understand during the construction process. That means the world to us! So many “clients” have become “friends” or even “family” to us over the years. That is what makes our profession so rewarding & fulfilling. I would tell those that are in the infancy stages of their journeys, to believe in yourself regardless of what others say or label you. Keep your head held high, always be true to yourself, honest, humble, respectful, & treat others how you want to be treated. Don’t be afraid to be different & definitely don’t be afraid to take chances. Bet on yourself! It pays off more often than not!
To close, maybe we can chat about your parents and what they did that was particularly impactful for you?
This is such a difficult question to answer. My parents sacrificed so much for me growing up. They worked extremely hard to give me everything they possibly could. My folks were definitely blue-collar people. So often they would go without to try & give me the world. They taught me the value of hard work, & more importantly how to be a man. We grew up in a small 1300-square-foot house in a less-than-desirable area. However, looking back that was such an instrumental part of what helped me find direction, ethics, moral compass, & appreciation for the small things in life. During my adolescence, I made mistakes & went down the wrong path quite a few times. So many supposed friends & family turned their backs on me & unfortunately parents because of my actions. They told my folks to cut their losses & give up on me. My mom & dad never wavered. They always believed in me & knew that I had potential. They are still to this day, my biggest supporters, my biggest fans, & my world. I would do anything for them. The older I have gotten I often think back to how much they taught me & more importantly guided me early on in life. They showed me, true unconditional love, & they laid the groundwork for how I parent my own kids. My parents have been married for over 48 years now! They have been so incredibly instrumental in how I model my own marriage of 20-plus years. They are my beacon of light! I will forever be indebted to them for all they have done for me throughout the years. They gave me purpose & most importantly showed me mercy when quite honestly I didn’t deserve it. I can only hope to return a fraction of the infinite love & guidance they have bestowed on me. I love them & appreciate them dearly.
