Meet David Temple

We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful David Temple. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with David below.

Hi David, appreciate you sitting with us today to share your wisdom with our readers. So, let’s start with resilience – where do you get your resilience from?
I suppose my resilience began at an early age. As one of four children, there was plenty of competition in our family, both for space, time and attention. As I began developing in early childhood, and given I wasn’t particularly exceptional at sports, I learned to fit in other ways. The biggest way I fit in was my humor. After all, if you’re not a “jock” or particularly “handsome” you had to find other ways to fit in; I did so with my humor. Then, when my voice changed in Junior High, I realized that the power-combo of humor and a “radio voice” created a vast opportunity to gain attention and approval. With time, and a deep passion for radio, I learned early on that if I wanted to be the best I had to work hard. And I did. From early on, I began practicing to be the best announcer I could be. And with time, I would increase that knowledge and prowess behind the microphone. It wasn’t long before professionals around me began to take notice, and soon I was climbing one city after another, toward some of my very first and early dreams: To work in the Top 10 radio markets in the country. And I did. Then, with each passing decade, I continued to hone my skills, get tougher through rejection, become more polished with increased practice, all the while, increasing my income and stature in the professional world of radio, television and eventually film. In the end, I look back and thank my late father for his influence in my life and understanding what integrity means. And to my late mother, who always encouraged me to accept my creative side and to hone it to the best of my ability. Never Give Up, is a mantra I’ve held close for these past five-plus decades.

Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?
My first love was radio. And now, after having a prolific radio career that spanned over 25 years, I’m happy to be behind the mic once again in the form of podcasting. Being podcast host of TheThrillerZone.com, I’m able to combine so many of my loves. I love the art of conversation; of learning from people who are the best in their field; I enjoy music and the creative energy behind production; having also dabbled as an actor in both television and film, I am able to use those “entertainment skills” when meeting and interviewing people. As an indie filmmaker, I learned early on what it meant to be able to see a rather monumental dream come to life; if it meant raising the money to do so, I did so. If it required adapting a screenplay from a book I wrote, I wrote so. And with talents as both and actor and producer, I knew how to pull a large team together. As a director, it allowed me to bring the entire dream all together full circle. Finally, as a voiceover actor, with nearly forty years of experience, I have learned so many things about nuance, wordsmithing, craftsmanship, selling, performing, emotion building and so much more. I love my job (although more often than not it’s much more play), and I hope it shows at every turn. With the success of my fiction-based podcast, TheThrillerZone.com, along with my growing interest in non-fiction, I will soon launch a new and second podcast that centers around non-fiction work that interests me, fulfills me, and challenges me to learn more and share more of the things that educate, enlighten and encourage the human spirit.

If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
Persistence. Patience. Positivity.

Persistence to keep going whenever it gets tough, or I get discouraged.
Patience to know that if you dream big, work hard, treat people fairly, and operate in integrity, you will succeed.
Positivity is a quality that will get you through a great many hard times; that, and the belief in yourself.

Is there a particular challenge you are currently facing?
The number one challenge I’m currently facing is being seen and heard by MORE people. Podcasting has grown so quickly in such a relative short amount of time, and has been discovered by every person with a microphone and an idea, that everyone thinks that it’s so easy and they can make a go of it.

However, I have found that it takes time, sweat equity, patience and perseverance; not to mention a bit of money. You want to grow big? You have to pull in big numbers. And those numbers equate to people who tune in to listen (and/or watch), and then to share it with a friend.

I will be spending more time researching and more money spending in order to find larger audiences. Finding the “big names” (read: talent, authors, doctors, specialists, etc.) isn’t the problem. In fact, after approaching 200 episodes over a period of nearly three years, I have learned that it takes CONSISTENCY to get noticed. It takes PROFESSIONALISM to be respected. But it takes NUMBERS to grow.

THAT is something I intend to do and make happen here in 2024.
