Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to David Thomas Newman. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Hi David Thomas, really appreciate you joining us to talk about a really relevant, albeit unfortunate topic – layoffs and getting fired. Can you talk to us about your experience and how you overcame being let go?
I guess, technically, it wasn’t really a layoff, but I dabble in the Film & TV industry producing indie films (and also acting in them) and the whole business is basically on strike. Just before the WGA Strike, I parted ways with my Hollywood manager and agent, and now that SAG-AFTRA is on strike, there are far fewer projects being made. I still produce and act in indie films, but I’m focusing more on my SEO Consulting business. My previous career was a very lucrative one in the Oil & Gas industry, so I learned quite a bit about business development, project management, and search engine optimization. Translating those skills into my own company by helping small business owners get found on Google and Instagram is extremely rewarding, not to mention insanely fun. I love the “chase” of hunting down new prospects, new leads, and new projects.
Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?
I started out helping boost people’s individual Instagram accounts by learning the proper methods and strategies behind the algorithms and how its artificial intelligence works. Having done this for major Oil & Gas corporations gives you some pretty wild insight behind how the internet works, how search engine results pages work, how the search function on apps work, and how to optimize a website or an account within those parameters.
Most people have no clue what SEO is (search engine optimization), let alone how it works. Basically, you have to present to Google or Instagram (or any online space, for that matter) that you are an expert in your field, and then these search engines will “rank” you based on how your content compares to other experts and competitors in your field. Most people don’t really know that the internet isn’t just Google. Google is a search engine. Instagram is a search engine, YouTube is also a search engine (owned by Google), Pinterest is a search engine, Tik Tok is a search engine, and so on. If you want your company Instagram or your small business website to be found by potential clients, then you need help from an SEO Consultant like https://HyperGrowth.Expert.
SEO is what you need in order to be found on Google. You’ve heard of people “ranking #1 on Google” right? Welcome to the world of search engines. Not only do you have to show that you are an expert by providing tons of niche-relevant content on your website, like I mentioned above, but that’s just on your site. This is called “on-page optimization.” You also have to prove that what you’re saying is true, but getting industry players to give your site something similar to a thumbs up. Those are called “backlinks.” Have you noticed sometimes in articles or blogs or any online publication that there are word which have blue or underline hyperlinks? When you click on that keyword, or web link, or image, you are taken somewhere else (like another website). That’s called backlinking. Relevant backlinks tell Google that another website confirms that what you say is true, and therefore should be ranked for that type of content (whatever the article is about). For example, this article that you’re reading right now will have backlinks to the HyperGrowth.Expert website, giving the site relevant, local, backlink juice. Once Google “crawls” this website like a spider on a… world wide web (see what I did there?), then my company’s website will get a higher domain authority (basically your website’s report card) and rank higher in the Google SERP (search engine results page) for my industry when people search something like “Long Beach SEO Consultant” or something similar. It’s honestly not complicated when you think about any kind of competition. The winner has to be the best, right? So your website must have the best content (keywords), the most content (service pages, about me sections, etc), proof from other websites (backlinks), online directories (citations), your name, address, and phone (NAP), local evidence (Google Maps), etc. In order to rank higher than your competitors and get found by your clients, you have to have more than your competitors. That’s where Hyper Growth comes in. We reverse-engineer what your competitors did to rank, see how far behind you are, and develop a 90-Day plan using the data we found about your competition in order to beat them. Sometimes this takes 6-9 months to accomplish, but a lot of times it can take far less (could be less than 90 days). The reason for that is search engines like Google and Instagram want everybody to play by the rules. If your competitor has 1,000 backlinks and you only have 10, Google doesn’t want you to spam the entire internet with keywords and backlinks to rank higher. It’s not a good look. So you have limits on these websites and apps which make ranking take time. However, if we find some juicy backlinks and a gap in keyword research, it could be an overnight success! Ere go: Hyper Growth.
There is more to it than just content and keywords, though, and one way you can beat Instagram’s algorithm is by manipulating it. Social proof is key for small businesses, especially startups, sole proprietors, or companies that don’t understand how to build an online presence. When most people hear social proof, they think of Instagram Bots and really sleazy companies that get you shadowbanned. The truth is, when done the right way, you can buy those 10K Followers from our engagement pod of 50,000 users, then use the same pod to get 10 Comments, 100 Likes, and 10,000 Views on every one of your posts for 30 days. As long as you are using our custom inbound and outbound marketing strategies within the app, Instagram won’t mind at all, and we’ve done it for plenty accounts already. Boosting your organic growth with exchanges like our engagement pod will help you ride the wave, get social proof, and find your organic clientele. Instagram simply wants their users (you, me, and literally everyone else) to stay on the app and use it as much as possible. Why? Because their advertisers pay them tons of money for that. Just continue being organic, continue using the app, and continue making great content. Then you’ll achieve Hyper Growth!
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
As an Eagle Scout, I learned project management at an early age. That has to be the best skill I’ve honed over the years. In any role, any job, any career, project management will always serve you. Even in your personal life. The quickest way to learn about your weaknesses is try to manage a project yourself. Something small like updating car parts, painting your second bedroom, or building a bench for your neighbors porch. You learn self-reliance, using your hands, and, obviously, how to manage a project. If you can learn how to do this, you will learn how to work with others, how to lead people, and succeed.
Who is your ideal client or what sort of characteristics would make someone an ideal client for you?
Small businesses. Plumbers, dentists, photographers, roofers, concrete, soft-story retrofitters, Botox spas, ADU builders, anyone really. If you don’t like cold-calling, hate spending money on ads, and want more clients in your local area, then you need HyperGrowth.Expert
