Meet David Wilkerson

Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to David Wilkerson. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.

David, so many exciting things to discuss, we can’t wait. Thanks for joining us and we appreciate you sharing your wisdom with our readers. So, maybe we can start by discussing optimism and where your optimism comes from?

My optimism comes from having a very clear trajectory, and life slowly but surely revealing the path to me as long as I make sound decisions. I also understand that in order to excel in something “different”, it takes quite a bit of delusion. Not allowing others to speak fear over your plans is essential to remaining optimistic.

Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?

My creative career started in the animation industry; working on adult animated projects that would allow me to build an extensive resume and get my foot in the door. Years later, I became a full-time illustrator and college professor. My illustration catalog consists mostly of biographies. I believe that being sought after to represent someone visually is one of the highest honors. I became a professor as a way to pay it forward and to help upcoming artists navigate the industry in the age of A.I. My goal is always to ensure that my students leave my class feeling more confident and fundamentally sound as they move forward. It’s truly the most rewarding part of my career. Community is at the root of my brand, and ultimately strengthens an artist

If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?

Being kind, teachable, and disciplined have carried me throughout my creative journey. Those three qualities allow optimal room for growth regardless of the industry that you plan to work in. Focus on preserving positive relationships and becoming fundamentally sound; rather than actively trying to develop a “style”. Trends come and go. It’s about putting yourself in position to keep progressing.

What was the most impactful thing your parents did for you?

Although they didn’t quite understand what I was pursuing, they provided a safe space for me to explore my creative interests without judgement. I’m forever grateful for that.
