We were lucky to catch up with David Zilmer recently and have shared our conversation below.
David, so good to have you with us today. We’ve always been impressed with folks who have a very clear sense of purpose and so maybe we can jump right in and talk about how you found your purpose?
I believe there are moments in people’s life’s where they rise to the occasion when a challenge is presented. These challenges are but stepping stones to sharpen one’s character, there is not a singular moment I can recall.but there was a series of moments from an early age and possibly even before I was born that would lead me to my purpose. One of the earliest was riding with my grandma to go to school in the morning listening to her motown cassette tapes, hearing the classics and singing along as loud as I could, another would be seeing Jimi Hendrix play,I wanted to be that free,it was just the coolest thing on the planet to me at the time,my family was also very big on music and dance but being from the Caribbean my destiny was to be a doctor or a lawyer.I knew I had found my passion when I told my grandma and my ma I’m gonna be a big guitar player and go sing around the world and didn’t fear them giving me the pow pow.
Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?
To start I am a musician who plays guitar, piano, vocals, bass,as well as production, musical arrangements and also booking management and artist development.these are some of the skills that I’ve acquired over the years of teaching music lessons and performing. My main goal at the moment is to add the final touches to my debut album with my band Tewahedo as well as story boarding 2 music videos for the singles.I’m also working on a solo project called Turiya, most of the songs are done and are In the mixing and mastering phases, the single daily ritual is out now on all platforms, the next drop will be called solo tu.I am also working on some out of state shows at the moment with some other bands in Atlanta,as well as finalizing some designs for our merch. Also transitioning my music lesson business from 100% in person to adding a remote option so that I can travel and still stay connected to the students.
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
It’s hard to narrow down a lifetime of learning into 3 bullet points but I’ll try my best, first and foremost if you are going to be in the entertainment industry or any sort of artistry you need to be self sufficient and have confidence in what your doing even when you can’t see the light at the end of the tunnel. Once you’ve developed this state of mind the next thing is to learn how to back it up meaning practice, practice, practice, make sure you are proficient in the medium of your choosing no one likes someone who talks a big game but can’t back it up,be humble and let your instrument do the talking.last but not least put the work down and go outside live life, gain inspiration, don’t overwork yourself, also be wise in expanding your network, you never know who is going to lead you to that next opportunity so be humble and talk to everyone.
Do you think it’s better to go all in on our strengths or to try to be more well-rounded by investing effort on improving areas you aren’t as strong in?
“a jack of all trades is a master of none, but oftentimes better than a master of one.”
In a musical sense we have plenty of people who can get away with just playing reggae or funk, often times it is encouraged as there’s venues that are only for those genres.but a true musician,or a true artist I believe is someone who can do a little bit of everything. If you limit yourself to one genre in this game you limit your opportunity’s, the more you can do musically the more valuable you are,why hire a guitar player and a singer when you can have one guy who can do both?
