We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Dawn Gregg. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Dawn below.
Dawn, so great to be with you and I think a lot of folks are going to benefit from hearing your story and lessons and wisdom. Imposter Syndrome is something that we know how words to describe, but it’s something that has held people back forever and so we’re really interested to hear about your story and how you overcame imposter syndrome.
I am the sibling of an actor who received global attention at a young age. Being a supporting player in the narrative that swept our family off its feet and changed the trajectory of our lives, has come with so many blessings and some challenges. For each of us affected by the whirlwind, some scars too. As an adult, I can look back at my younger self and understand that the one stand out time I can remember having “stage fright” was most likely due to me knowing that any moves I made in the acting field were being scrutinized under a microscope of comparison. I remember choking on one line of dialogue again and again…in front of a live sit-com audience! After that paralyzing experience, I never had trouble again. It was as if a roadblock had been removed. Any imposter syndrome I may have been operating under vanished. I absolutely knew that I had the ability to act and act well but truthfully, it was not my top priority. A passion for story telling nudged me into studying screenwriting at USC. I met my actor husband on set and we married young. We both have much experience with the mountain tops and the underbelly of Hollywood. With two young sons, we took a self imposed hiatus from the industry, leaving our careers behind…agents and all. We prioritized our marriage, our family, home educated our tribe (which grew to 5) in the Sonoran desert, and quietly worked on building our skill sets and some passion projects. We currently reside in Los Angeles again. After a long hiatus, there is a different sort of imposter syndrome that taunts. “You don’t belong here.” “It’s been too long.” “You’ve been surpassed.” “You can’t compete with the kids.” “You’ve missed the boat.” The temptation to believe those taunts does not work on those who trust that no good thing for us is ever withheld from us. The taunts have no power here.
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
1. Having had a behind the scenes look into the lives of “successful” entertainment industry folks, I understood from a young age ….Shakespeare’s
sentiment, “All that glistens is not gold. ” Or in the words of Robert Frost and Pony Boy…
Nature’s first green is gold,
Her hardest hue to hold.
Her early leaf’s a flower;
But only so an hour.
Then leaf subsides to leaf.
So Eden sank to grief,
So dawn goes down to day.
Nothing gold can stay.
2. Realizing that I am a creative …. made in the image of a masterful artist has made all the difference to me.
3. Understanding that gifts, talents, abilities, and opportunities are given intentionally with loving purpose has brought a sense of peace to my pursuits.
