We recently connected with Dawn Marie Hughes and have shared our conversation below.
Dawn Marie, thanks so much for taking the time to share your insights and lessons with us today. We’re particularly interested in hearing about how you became such a resilient person. Where do you get your resilience from?
My resilience comes from God guiding me through countless life challenges that were meant to break me and knowing and understanding that each series of events are just moments.
In retrospect, with a lot of the traumatic experiences I had endured, from a variety of different types of abuse and assaults, the loss of my babies and to the discovery of a brain tumor in the midst of a bad divorce, I probably shouldn’t be here.
But I am. And I have God to thank for that.
Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?
With resilience comes determination. We all have an innate ability inside of us to adapt. Through my life experiences, I was able become flexible in every environment. It also built an empathetic capability that led me to my creative outlet, acting. It is both my passion and my purpose.
I grew up on the stage, performing in several plays throughout my childhood. In college, I had my first taste of the film industry as a background extra for an independent film called A Little Inside, directed by Kara Harshbarger and starring Kathy Baker and Benjamin King.
Today I continue to foster this creative outlet by working in film as both an actor and a writer and also do some modeling as well. I have had the pleasure of working with such celebrities as Christian Slater and Emilio Estevez.
I had the pleasure to be a part of Ohio based films; currently streaming on Tubi are Clay Zombies directed by Jake Jolley and St. Gabriel, a TV series through i71 Movies. On Amazon Prime, you can catch A Story For Winter, directed by Nathan Weidner.
I am most proud of my newest work with a film called Chasing Glamour, also directed by Nathan Weidner which is premiering on Amazon Prime.
I have also modeled for both Zulily and 614 Magazine.
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
1. Determination and Perseverance are what keep me going. I’m thankful to have a wonderful son who keeps me in this mindset as I want to be a positive role model in his life. He will grow up knowing that we really can overcome life’s hardships and challenges and that we can become successful and thriving adults with a purpose.
2. Growth and Learning are also big skills to have in the Film industry. There is a lot to know and a lot to do. I know that in order to grow, we must acquire knowledge and understanding. I continue to tap into other industries, build connections and refine my skills.
3. Letting Go and Letting God has always helped me to see the bigger picture. When I am down, I know to take that time to step back, meditate on his word, and reflect on the moment in order to move forward. Being down is only temporary.
What is the number one obstacle or challenge you are currently facing and what are you doing to try to resolve or overcome this challenge?
I think my biggest challenge in the moment currently, is raising my teenage son as a single mom while working 2 jobs in order to provide for my home. Time constraints and health issues have made it hard to put in auditions for bigger films and roles.
However, I know this is a season meant to reflect, continue learning new skills and building those connections to become an even stronger performer. I continue to work hard to build my health back up as well by fueling my body with the nutrients it needs and working out to maintain strength physically.
