We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Dawn Rix a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Dawn, appreciate you sitting with us today to share your wisdom with our readers. So, let’s start with resilience – where do you get your resilience from?
I believe it is from having such a strong faith. Faith that in the end all will be okay and recognizing that quitting is not an option. Sometimes a wrench may be thrown into our plans and it may feel like a major interruption when in reality it was God’s way of blocking it to make way for a much bigger blessing! I believe a great example of resilience is knowing it
truly isn’t the cards you have been dealt but how you play the hand. Again the come back is always bigger than the setback when
giving up is not an option! ❤️
Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?
Although I wear a lot of hats, I feel like performing live as a singer songwriter is the most exciting one!
I’ve been singing since I was a little girl and there’s something special about being on stage, using my voice as a way to connect with people as a storyteller through the music & lyrics. I am an entertainer for sure! I am super excited that next week I will be in the studio recording my new album!
Some of the other hats I have worn proudly includes serving as a Medical Service Specialist in the 167th West Virginia Air National Guard, being a Published Award Winning Author, Graduate of WVU, salon owner, Leana & Steven’s MOM, a grandmother of 3 grandboys and an Autism Advocate/ Founder of AUTISM-TheMissingPiece.Org. a nonprofit organization that offers awareness, resources, and support to all touched by Autism. I also am the CEO of DreamCatcher Consulting & Design and Executuve Director of a local organization where I coach, inspire and mentor young women competing in the Miss America Competition.
With a servant’s heart I volunteer my time & talent throughout my community and abroad. I hope to encourage readers to join me as a proud monthly sponsor of St Judes Children’s Center and Musicians On Call. ❤️
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
Great question! First and foremost I am a firm believer that when you are green you grow. When you are ripe you rot. So stay green!lol Be a good student always eager to learn and always strive to do better and get better at your craft.
I am thankful that my parents encouraged me to do any thing and supported everything I set out to do. Doesn’t mean I’m not focused, I just have many interests and and no limitations on my dreams.
One skill I know for certain has helped me was learned through years of interview prep when competing in the Miss America Organization. The confidence it gave me has empowered me step up on any stage or to walk in any room, represent myself and handle conversations at any level with poise, grace and conviction.
Alright so to wrap up, who deserves credit for helping you overcome challenges or build some of the essential skills you’ve needed?
I give alot of credit to my Dad for being most helpful & always supporting any craziness I decide to get into or goals I go for. Being a single mom can be quite a challenge and having any freedom to pursue things outside of the home can be tough without help. My DAD…he sacrifices alot including his time to caretake for my son so that I can get to work, perform or travel to record or attend an award show etc…
My son has Autism and through that I’ve learned patience, the ability to adapt and overcome, to focus on the able not the label, and unconditional love! All are things needed to be successful! I try to live by this quote
“Doubt your doubts but never doubt your faith.”
