Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Dawne Mckay. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Hi Dawne , really happy you were able to join us today and we’re looking forward to sharing your story and insights with our readers. Let’s start with the heart of it all – purpose. How did you find your purpose?
My life took an unexpected turn when I was involved in a horrific motor vehicle crash that changed everything. The recovery process was challenging, both physically and emotionally, but it also became a journey of self-discovery that ultimately led me to find new purpose and meaning in life. The crash forced me to slow down and reflect on what truly mattered to me. The experience made me reconsider what I wanted to focus on moving forward. The turning point in my recovery journey came when I realized that I seemed to be alone in this journey as there was not much support for people like us. I decided to share my story and offer support to others who had gone through similar experiences. These connections provided the encouragement and understanding I needed to continue moving forward.

Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?
I am the Founder of the Crash Support Network and continue to donate countless hours to our crash survivor community by sharing resources, highly informative articles, downloadable checklists and a blog that allows me to share my own personal experience as a survivor of a horrific motor vehicle crash. The Crash Support Network continues to work hard at bringing awareness to crash survivors through the CSN’s social media platforms as well as the online support group with survivors across the world. I am also the author of the book, “Talk Crash to Me – What to Expect After Surviving a Motor Vehicle Collision and How to Manage Your Recovery.” Our organization has always been driven by a deep commitment to making a meaningful impact on the lives of motor vehicle crash survivors and their families. As we grew and evolved, it became increasingly clear that our mission aligned more closely with the principles of a not-for-profit organization. As a not-for-profit, we are better positioned to collaborate with other organizations, apply for grants, and attract donations. This increased access to resources enables us to expand our programs, reach more people, and have a greater impact on the lives of those who need our support the most including our first event, “Healing Together” that will be hosted by the Crash Support Network this September.
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
As I look back in the rear view mirror of my recovery journey, I realize that three key qualities played a significant role in helping me rebuild my life after being seriously injured in the crash. These qualities—resilience, patience, and self-compassion—were not only essential in my healing process but also in rediscovering my sense of purpose.
My advice would be to treat yourself as you would a friend. Imagine what you would say to a friend going through the same experience. It’s important to offer yourself the same kindness and understanding. It’s okay to feel angry, sad, or frustrated. Acknowledge your emotions without judgment and allow yourself to experience them fully. Take time to care for your physical, emotional, and mental well-being. Whether it’s through rest, engaging in activities you love, or seeking support, self-care is crucial to your recovery.

Okay, so before we go we always love to ask if you are looking for folks to partner or collaborate with?
Our mission is to raise awareness to the recovery journey that many people face after being affected by a motor vehicle crash and to provide online support, education, events and resources. At the Crash Support Network, we are dedicated to making a lasting impact in the lives of crash survivors and their families. We believe that collaboration is key to amplifying our efforts and reaching even more people who desperately need our support. We are currently looking for like-minded individuals and organizations to partner or collaborate with us. Companies that want to make a positive social impact are welcome to join us as sponsors, donors, or event partners. We’re especially interested in collaborating with businesses that offer services or products that can benefit our crash survivor community. If you are passionate about making a difference and have skills or resources to offer, we are always looking for volunteers and advocates to help us fuel our mission.
