We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Dawnn Monique Clisby a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Dawnn Monique, so good to have you with us today. We’ve always been impressed with folks who have a very clear sense of purpose and so maybe we can jump right in and talk about how you found your purpose?
I found my purpose by serving professionals in the black and brown communities that were not able to get in front of hiring managers and decision makers at both profit and non-profit organizations. Corporate America was not allowing people of color to get their foot in the door and when they were, they were not advancing.
Retention strategies on how to maintain this talent became critical to overcome. Challenges were not only getting in the door but being able to stay and advance. Being an advocate through communicating with CEO’s and HR managers were extremely critical in being heard and recognized.
Submitted talent candidates that were in the black and brown communities to hiring manager was just the start. Being a voice to advocate through the interview and negotiations, was all a part of me helping them through this application journey. Reviewing resumes, making the best recommendations for editing resumes, coaching with behavioral interviewing to negotiating salaries if offers were made.
Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?
I soon plan on working with a company that has launched a Diversity Equity and Inclusion app for training for all employees, that will focus on communicating with people that do not look like you, planning and collaborating on teams with various cultures and backgrounds etc.
This may be less evasive yet mandatory training for all employees for collaboration, communication, planning and goal setting.
I am also developing an onboarding program around DE& I. DC Workforce Solutions will be able to help both profit and non-profit businesses.
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
Three skill traits or qualities that would stand out are perseverance, passion, and purpose.
Perseverance is not giving up, despite or delay in achieving success, even if it has its challenges and hurdles to overcome. It’s the tenacity and effort required even if it has obstacles. Passion means to have a strong desire and emotion that is deeply stirring or ungovernable. And purpose is a long-term goal that is both professional and personally meaningful and makes a positive mark on the world.
Okay, so before we go we always love to ask if you are looking for folks to partner or collaborate with?
DC Workforce Solutions, LLC is looking to partner with decision makers from organizations, that has a strong interest in hiring talent within the black and brown communities, and looking to retain that talent, along with growth and development within the organization. Being connected to hiring decision makers is the key to help find the best and top talent in the black and brown communities.
Secondly, my parents instilled great values, such as work ethics, and honesty that created a character of resilience in me, and I am forever grateful for both Judith and Donald Clisby. I wish they were still here to see the fruits of their labor paying off.
