We recently connected with Dayna Oilyhairboss and have shared our conversation below.
Dayna, thanks so much for taking the time to share your insights and lessons with us today. We’re particularly interested in hearing about how you became such a resilient person. Where do you get your resilience from?
I think in general society has first forced me to learn a level of resilience. It is a complex and multifaceted phenomenon, stemming from a combination of historical, cultural, and personal factors. It’s important to understand that this resilience isn’t a monolithic trait, but rather a diverse range of strengths developed in response to unique challenges.
As a black woman a few facets that have built my resilience are:
1. Community and Social Support:
* Having a strong community network, including my family, friends, and religion, have played a vital role in providing emotional and practical support.
* These networks offer a sense of belonging and shared experience, reinforcing resilience.
2. Cultural Values and Spirituality:
* Cultural values that emphasize strength, faith, and perseverance have contributed to my resilience.
* Spirituality and religious beliefs have often provided me a source of comfort and strength.
3. My own Personal Agency and Determination:
* I have always had a remarkable determination and agency in overcoming obstacles.
* I also have a strong sense of self and a commitment to achieving goals are essential components of resilience.
Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?

If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
1. Grit-passion and perseverance for long-term goals.
2. Love-a strong since of action motivated by love.
3. Determination-a skill to accomplish big goals.
I tell them to always ask the question and get in every room. If you don’t ask the answer is always no. So many doors and opportunities will open to those that go after what they want.
Okay, so before we go we always love to ask if you are looking for folks to partner or collaborate with?
Absolutely. In all of my organizations I am looking for people that have a shared concern for impact and community. I love collaborating with people that much like myself are determined and committed.
