We recently connected with Dean Marletta and have shared our conversation below.
Dean, so many exciting things to discuss, we can’t wait. Thanks for joining us and we appreciate you sharing your wisdom with our readers. So, maybe we can start by discussing optimism and where your optimism comes from?
when I was a young adult, I gat sick and ended up in the hospital for a few months. there where only two reason for me being sick, the doctors told me . one would have been a parasite , which it wasn’t . the other thing that would cause my illness was emotions and holding everything in. that was it. after laying in the hospital for months I decided that I would never do those things again. hold stuff in and this is the most important thing worry about things. so my outlook on life is just that. I don’t worry about anything not related to family and business. all the little thing are just that . little and not important to worry about.. this is where I get my optimism about life and business . no matter what comes I just keep my eyes on the prize success . and keep moving forward.
Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?
well first off I never dreamed of having a deli. I’m a builder by trade. I hurt my shoulder and had to have surgery . while recuperating I saw this rental space that I thought was interesting. I talked to my wife and she said how long do you think you can swing a hammer for. I thought about it and I realized she was right so I decided to open up a deli. I also decided that the deli space was going top be some where that I wanted to hang out with. so with that I designed an open concept and put all the things that I love. mototcycles, guitars dragons and custom woodworking items that I built. this was my man cave that also serves food. I used to work in the movie business so I learned a few trick and I put that into my deli.. I own the deli . I also run the day to day operations as well as cook clean run errands mop the floors and anything else you can think of. this is my baby now and I will see it succeed.. Dinos deli is a place where people can come and just sit down listen to good music play guitar if they want to get something to eat or just enjoy the atmosphere . our main food items is that everything is home made and not store bought
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
looking back my main quality was being creative and not limiting myself to jus one thing . I tried it all. the other main thing was. I was told early in life that if you want to learn something work with someone that is better than you. that means if you want to better with guitar play with someone who’s better than you. it pushes you to be better. and the last quality is that I don’t quit you find something that excites you and never stop
Okay, so before we go, is there anyone you’d like to shoutout for the role they’ve played in helping you develop the essential skills or overcome challenges along the way?
early in life my dad influenced me. I wanted to go to art school. and my dad said in typical dad voice. you won’t make money as an artist. I was mad but then he said to me this. son no matter what you do in life, whether it’s a business or working for some one. docent matter you need to understand money and the working essentials of business. that clicked. so I one t to school got a degree and had many businesses , and I got what he said.
