Meet Deandra Thomas

We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Deandra Thomas. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Deandra below.

Deandra , thank you so much for joining us today. Let’s jump right into something we’re really interested in hearing about from you – being the only one in the room. So many of us find ourselves as the only woman in the room, the only immigrant or the only artist in the room, etc. Can you talk to us about how you have learned to be effective and successful in situations where you are the only one in the room like you?

During my time in the social work field, there were moments when I felt too young… too new… too “under qualified” to sit in certain positions. I would look around the table and see years of experience staring back at me. Degrees. Titles. Seniority. And internally, I questioned whether I truly belonged there.
Imposter syndrome doesn’t knock loudly it whispers. It tells you that you haven’t done enough. That you haven’t earned your seat.
That someone else is more deserving.
But what I had to learn and truly embrace is that God qualifies what we deem as unqualified. The very areas where we feel insufficient are often the places where He stretches us the most. Sometimes the only thing disqualifying us is the story we are telling ourselves.

Leading people who were older than me came with its own set of challenges. There were moments where I had to navigate respect, perception, and authority not by demanding it, but by earning it through consistency. I learned quickly that leadership is not about age. It’s not about titles. It’s not about how long you’ve been in the room.
Leadership is about stewardship. It’s about how you show up. It’s about how you treat people. It’s about your work ethic when no one is watching. It’s about your ability to remain humble while carrying responsibility.
I remained teachable. And that was my greatest strength. Because even in leadership, you are still a student. Titles do not make you untouchable. Positions do not make you all-knowing. The moment you think you have nothing left to learn is the moment growth stops. I learned that humility and confidence can coexist. You can walk boldly in your assignment while still being open to correction. You can supervise others while still honoring their experience. You can be young and still be called to lead. And here’s what I know now: Your age does not disqualify you. Your background does not disqualify you. Your doubts do not disqualify you. If you are in a room that feels bigger than you, it may be because you were meant to grow into it. Sometimes God places you in spaces that stretch you so you can see what He already placed inside of you.
Titles don’t qualify you your character does.
Longevity doesn’t qualify you your consistency does. And leadership isn’t about being the oldest voice in the room it’s about being the most responsible one. To every young professional questioning whether you belong. If you’re there, you were trusted to be there. Now grow into it.

Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?

The Social Social Worker: Where Conversation Meets Community The Social Social Worker is more than a brand it’s a platform designed to bridge systems, amplify voices, and create meaningful change within child welfare and mental health spaces.

The Social Social Worker Podcast

The Social Social Worker Podcast was created to hold real conversations the ones that often happen behind closed doors in courtrooms, therapy offices, agencies, and homes impacted by the system. What makes this podcast unique is that it doesn’t only center professionals it also centers families and individuals who have been directly impacted by the child welfare system.
We believe healing and reform require hearing from everyone at the table.
On this platform, we feature child advocates case managers, therapists, mental health professionals, law enforcement officers, first responders, former foster youth, parents who have navigated reunification, and families who have experienced system involvement
By elevating both professional expertise and lived experience, we create a fuller picture of what child welfare truly looks like beyond policy and paperwork.
The podcast focuses on the realities of child welfare work, burnout prevention and professional retention, Reunification and family restoration, Foster youth empowerment, System reform and collaboration, Bridging gaps between agencies and communities.

This is a space where professionals can learn, families can feel seen, and communities can better understand how systems operate and how they can improve. We don’t just talk about change. We talk with the people living it.

The Social Social Worker Foundation Inc. transforms those conversations into community action.

As a nonprofit organization, the Foundation focuses on strengthening families, empowering professionals, and increasing access to mental health education, financial literacy, and community-based support.
Our mission is rooted in this belief
Families impacted by the system deserve resources, dignity, and opportunity not stigma. Through initiatives such as:
Community wellness, & wealth summits,
Mental health education events, Financial literacy workshops, Reform and rehabilitation discussions, Professional development and retention trainings. We are building bridges between systems and the communities they serve. One of our signature initiatives is the Wellness & Wealth Summit (May 16, 2026) bringing together conversations on mental health, real estate investment, credit repair, and reform because healing and economic empowerment go hand in hand.

A Unified Vision
The Podcast gives voice.
The Foundation gives action.
Together, they create an ecosystem where professionals, families, and community leaders can collaborate rather than operate in silos.

The Social Social Worker stands for:
Purpose-driven advocacy.
Healing-centered leadership.
Empowerment beyond system involvement.
Because impact starts with conversation but it doesn’t end there.

There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?

Looking back, the three most impactful areas in my journey have been:

1. Self-awareness and emotional intelligence Understanding myself, managing my reactions, and staying grounded in high-stress environments has been foundational. You can’t lead others or serve families well if you don’t know yourself first.

2. Communication and relationship building Clear communication and strong professional relationships open doors. The ability to listen, collaborate, and bridge different systems makes a lasting impact.

3. Strategic thinking and adaptability Thinking beyond the current role, understanding systems, and being willing to pivot has allowed for growth and long term impact.

Advice for those early in their journey:
Invest in personal growth, sharpen your communication skills, and learn the bigger picture of your field. Focus on mastering the fundamentals and building character the titles will come later.

How can folks who want to work with you connect?
