Meet Deanna Sirlin

Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Deanna Sirlin. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.

Deanna, so good to have you with us today. We’ve always been impressed with folks who have a very clear sense of purpose and so maybe we can jump right in and talk about how you found your purpose?
My purpose has always been with me.

Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?
I am an artist who works across platforms. I make paintings on canvas and also translate my painting into other mediums. My paintings have been remade into videos, large-scale installations, and lightworks. My artwork has cascaded down a flight of steps. It has been inside a fountain with falling water, a mosaic on the façade of a fire station, and a transparent composition that covers the side of a building. I am creating a new lens through which the viewer experiences the world. All my work is about gesture, color, and light. I want the viewer to be immersed in my color and to witness how my hand, eye, and body were linked to color and movement when I made the paintings.

There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
I have always spent hours looking at, thinking about, and writing about visual art. It is important to see artworks in person, not just on the web, to really be able to experience the presence of the work. To be able to look and really see is an essential part of the life of artists.

How would you spend the next decade if you somehow knew that it was your last?
For me, the challenge is the physicality of the painting. I use my entire body when I am painting, and the connection to the physical is a primal act.
