We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Debbie Baisden a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Debbie, we’re thrilled to have you sharing your thoughts and lessons with our community. So, for folks who are at a stage in their life or career where they are trying to be more resilient, can you share where you get your resilience from?
My husband’s unexpected death in 2012 turned my world upside down. This unexpected tragedy blindsided our 4 young sons (ages 4-8 at the time) as we grappled with devastating loss and relentless pain. I was a stay-at-home mom who now shouldered the weight of providing for a family and attempting to be 2 parents. There is no opportunity to sob in bed for days, so my children fostered resilience, as did my faith in Jesus, as well as loved ones (and even strangers). When we are forced into fortitude, we develop resilience we never asked for.

Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?
As a former salad hater and sweat avoider, my tight jeans unknowingly began my journey to health and wellness. Thanks to my friend (and now business partner) Emily Saunders, I learned how to eat and move to not only get my pants to fit, but my energy to improve. Over time I became addicted to feeling better and growing stronger. After my husband’s unexpected death, a new chapter in my life opened, and I chose to pursue my newfound passion of fitness to help other busy women to quickly look and feel better. In 2013, Emily and I co-created Momsanity (because all moms need sanity), which focuses on motherhood, faith, fitness and nutrition. Our mission is to help moms get off the back burner with their health and focus on how to eat, move, and love God so that they feel fulfilled and their families benefit. We at Momsanity were recently featured live on Fox & Friends Weekend in New York to spotlight our supplement product line. Also in 2013, I created Fit With Deb, which began as group workouts at parks for moms to exercise while their kids played on the playground. This has evolved to the online space with a focus on fitness, nutrition, and wellness.

There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
Self-discipline is part of my “Type A” DNA, so I am a firm believer in being internally motivated to work hard. When we know on the front end that there is no boss to report to, and the days will be long and demanding, we are more prepared for the high expectations we must fulfill. I think learning from others successful in this realm is significant, as is creating an hourly calendar to block time for the various “buckets” of an entrepreneur’s day (like batching social media content, email newsletters, sale launches, etc).
Expert consultation is the “how” to success. When forming both Momsanity and Fit With Deb, there was a flood of information to rapidly learn, for example. We rely on others who are years into this online health space to instruct us on aspects of technology, social media, organization of time and content, and time management.
Inspiring transformation in others is a high-impact quality. Reverse engineering women’s results requires the ability to empower and transform their lives via education, accountability, and encouragement. To be that expert means we stay on top of fitness and nutrition information. To motivate and lead means continually evaluating what has the most impact for clients. Staying authentic, personal, and down-to-earth is how women connect so there is success.

To close, maybe we can chat about your parents and what they did that was particularly impactful for you?
Before I could read or write, my parents taught me about Jesus. That He is real and not a character in a book. I was raising my hands in praise as a young girl (though I strayed through my teen and college years). God is my anchor, my everything, and without that deep relationship with Him, my life is in vain. Eternity is a very long time, and my mom and dad shared the truth from the Bible, modeled how to pray, and took me to church.
