Meet Debi Starr

We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Debi Starr a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.

Hi Debi, so happy to have you on the platform and I think our readers are in for a treat because you’ve got such an interesting story and so much insight and wisdom. So, let’s start with a topic that is relevant to everyone, regardless of industry etc. What do you do for self-care and how has it impacted you?
For self care, I start each day with a barre workout. This connects my mind, body and soul. It unlocks any blocks and allows my creativity to flow.

Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?
Every day is a new adventure! Some days, I may be working on a pet portrait. Another day, I may be creating a special HUGE abstract piece for an interior designer’s client. If the stars are aligned, I may be creating new inventory… a Women ‘n’ Wine painting or a figurative piece. If it’s a Thursday afternoon, I will most likely be teaching an art project and if there is an event going on around town, you might find me painting live on location. Whatever the day, I can guarantee I am creating and expressing myself. Some exciting pieces in the works include a hand painted wedding dress, a HUGE piece for Woodhouse Spa Baybrook, several large abstract commissions for designer’s clients, some hand painted Veuve’ Clicquot champagne bottles, live painting at the CCISD Education Foundation Gala and LOTS of pet portraits.

There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
Looking back, I would say the most important skills I’ve mastered along my journey are my expertise in color, my diversity in styles, mediums and subjects and my openness to continue learning. You should ALWAYS keep learning! Allow yourself to experiment, play with materials and come up with new ideas. Grow!

Looking back over the past 12 months or so, what do you think has been your biggest area of improvement or growth?
What I have focused on most in the last 12 months is to conserve my energy for what matters most. I am conscious of surrounding myself with positivity, optimism and experiences. I listen to my intuition. I nourish my body, my mind and my soul. My art thrives as well as myself!
