Meet Deborah Godfrey

We were lucky to catch up with Deborah Godfrey recently and have shared our conversation below.

Hi Deborah, appreciate you sitting with us today to share your wisdom with our readers. So, let’s start with resilience – where do you get your resilience from?
I grew up with a resilient & hardworking mother. Owner of her very own successful hair salon at the age of 26. I always admired her hardworking & independent attitude. Though she is no longer here with me physically, she is spiritually.

Through the tragedy of losing her, I’ve become stronger and more independent. I use what she has taught me on a daily basis in all aspects of my life.

Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?
I am the creative director & designer of The Vanity Code. The Vanity Code is a brand about taking pride & admiration in ones own appearance. I design and develop clothing collections. I love the process of developing ideas and bringing them to life.

I plan on launching a sister company; The Vanity Agency. Where Vanity meets creativity in all realms.

Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
Creativity. Being able to express myself through my creations.

Passion. Finding my true passion and purpose. Being driven and determined by a love for creativity.

Authenticity. Being my authentic self in all things. Being genuine and having originality in everything I create.

My advice would be to start with your why. Find your passion, find your purpose.

Before we go, maybe you can tell us a bit about your parents and what you feel was the most impactful thing they did for you?
I come from a family of entrepreneurs and true go getters. My parents have had a drastic impact on who & where I am now in life. Both being immigrants, they took the risk of coming to Baltimore, Maryland to better the lives of their children.

My parents set me up for success in all aspects in life. They have always led by example.
