Deborah, looking forward to learning from your journey. You’ve got an amazing story and before we dive into that, let’s start with an important building block. Where do you get your work ethic from?
Growing up as a child with 5 siblings my father and mother worked very hard to support our family. My father worked 2 jobs one during the day, weekend and was also in the Army Reserves. Being the 2nd oldest child I was raised to help my parents with daily chores, running errands, and babysitting my 4 younger brothers. With my sister’s help, she is the oldest we worked together as a team washing dishes and helping with the laundry. We also have a brother who was diagnosed with mental disabilities and was autistic and did not speak. My mother went to numerous doctors finding hope and a cure for his disorders. This led to some tough days finding the best therapy to help him have the best training and care and took my mother many hours of research, testing and doctor visits.

My childhood was a busy one with many challenges and as a family we supported each other in our daily lives, school work and household chores helping my mother, father and younger brothers.

What makes most happy is the following

I am always happy for my customers who receive interviews and most importantly a new job offer. You can see my my reviews on Google many customers lives have changed and that is the ultimate pleasure I get for making a difference. I also strive to help the customer on whatever budget we are working with.

Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?
I started writing resumes when I was in my early 20’s while I was looking for a job for myself. My friend’s mother who was an educator gave me some tips to improve my resume and I landed a great job. Every since that experience I have been helping people with resumes. I started my first company when I was 23 years old and started selling resume out of my home part time. I eventually rented an office and people started visiting me telling me their stories. Some people lost their jobs, are changing careers, were recent college grads, military vets starting over and mothers returning to work.

What I love about what I do is listening to my customers stories, helping them focus on new job search goals and most important selling them on paper. I enjoy my customers telling me “wow” is that me. Sometimes people don’t see how much talent they have and I conduct an interview to bring out the best my clients have to offer.

I had my business for 10 years and in my 30’s I decided to work for a company. I landed a great job staying for 13 years and then like many of my customers I lost my job when my company was sold. Although I started another job I also established my company again in 2005, resumesthatsellyou.com promoting my brand and now I am able to help customers throughout the world due to the internet. When I first started the company there was no internet when I was 23. I am excited that I can help my customers from other countries.

It is important for my customers to know that it is possible to change careers, start over and find a job that gives you a life balance. Change can be scary for some people and sometimes we have many bumps in the road that can cause us to hesitate and take a risk, but it can be done. I am always inspired by my customers who are making bold moves, getting new college degrees regardless of their age and making a difference in their lives.

Along with my resume writing services I partner with my customers to develop a strategy and I can be a partner in their new life journey.

There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
Communication – Public Speaking – When I was young I was not a polished speaker or communicator. I attended acting school for several reasons but the most important tools I gained from this training was speaking in front of audiences and communicating and listening effectively. I also recommend Toastmasters to brush up on your skills and when you have that important job interview, presentation or conversation you will be at your best.

Flexibility – When I joined my company I was offered an administrative role. It was not the perfect job but it got me in the door. Eventually my company was in a financial crisis and we had our salaries cut 30%. At the time I wanted to quit but I stuck it out during the tough times. Eventually I was promoted several times, moved to NYC and Florida and had numerous pay increases and bonuses. In addition I ended up in the board room which was a great learning experience. If I was not flexible I would not have enjoyed these experiences.

Risks – I made several risks throughout my career, whether it was starting my own company, moving to other cities to get a promotion or telling my bosses I disagreed with their decision, I believe it was all worth it.

Alright so to wrap up, who deserves credit for helping you overcome challenges or build some of the essential skills you’ve needed?
My mentor has been my older sister. As a child I always looked up to her and she provided help during our growing years. It was my sister who introduced to her boss, and he offered me the best business deal. At the time I was young but I got a free office for 6 months and an opportunity to support their account with word processing services. Eventually this led to me opening my first business. My sister was instrumental in helping me with social media which I was not fond of, she encouraged me to learn linkedIn when it was just coming out and now I train my customers and optimize their sites to support their career goals. My sister has also has helped me to understand that what one person likes the other might not. Being flexible with customers is very important to be successful. Everyone likes something different and you need to listen to your customers.
