We were lucky to catch up with Deborah Young recently and have shared our conversation below.
Deborah, we’re so excited for our community to get to know you and learn from your journey and the wisdom you’ve acquired over time. Let’s kick things off with a discussion on self-confidence and self-esteem. How did you develop yours?
First, I want to say that I really love this question, and I sincerely appreciate you taking the time to interview me—thank you so much.
In terms of developing my confidence and self-esteem, it’s been a journey of learning and growth over the years. When I was younger, I often tried to fit into whatever mold others expected of me, wanting to feel like I was part of the “in crowd.” However, I found that this approach left me feeling exhausted and overwhelmed.
Over time, I realized that trying to be someone I wasn’t simply didn’t work. I had to learn to embrace the core characteristics that make me who I am—the way God created me. My confidence has come from understanding and accepting myself, including my flaws, and recognizing that personal growth is a continuous process.
I know that I will always be learning and striving to improve, but I’ve reached a place where I can confidently say that I accept who I am, and I’m proud of the person I’m becoming.
Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?
My blog, HeadphonesThoughts, is a lifestyle platform that I began during the pandemic in 2020, and it has grown significantly over the past few years. During this time, I’ve had the opportunity to receive press passes, write reviews, share lifestyle tips and tricks, and even conduct interviews. I started the blog as a way to express my thoughts and opinions about the world and to connect with others.
Over the years, I have grown both personally and professionally. I’ve learned valuable lessons about the importance of presenting my ideas thoughtfully, which has led me to improve my writing skills, including grammar and punctuation. I have also come to understand the need to own my mistakes; I have apologized for posts that may have offended and have made every effort to evolve and do better.
What I cherish most about being a blogger is the connection I have built with readers around the globe. I am deeply grateful to everyone who has supported me—whether through encouraging comments, gift cards, or even a simple cup of coffee. Their genuine support means the world to me, and it motivates me to continue growing my community.
As I look forward to a fresh start this year, I am excited to write more blog posts, secure additional press passes, and explore new opportunities such as further interviews. I remain committed to sharing my authentic voice while continuously learning and evolving as both a writer and a person.
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
I believe there are three essential skills for successful blogging:
1. Confidence:
Confidence is the foundation of any blog. When you put your opinions out into the world—whether through social media or your blog—you open yourself up to criticism. There will always be comments intended to undermine your self-worth. That’s why it’s crucial to be confident in who you are. Know what you want to write about, whether that’s reviews, fashion, food, or another niche, and be comfortable with your chosen focus. Of course, your interests may evolve over time, but maintaining confidence and a clear understanding of your audience is key.
2. Strong Writing Skills:
Good grammar and punctuation are vital to effective communication. I started as a basic writer, and over time I dedicated myself to improving my skills. As your writing improves, so does your ability to connect with readers. You might begin at a basic level, but continuous practice and learning will help you refine your style and build a loyal audience.
3. Continuous Learning and Adaptability:
The online world is ever-changing, and a successful blogger is always looking for ways to grow. This means researching trends, learning new techniques, and understanding search optimization and other tools to expand your blog’s reach. I’ve learned to adapt by constantly searching for strategies to improve and evolve my blog. The willingness to learn—and even to admit and learn from past mistakes—is essential for long-term success.
In summary, maintaining confidence, honing your writing skills, and committing to lifelong learning are the three pillars that have helped me grow as a blogger. With these skills, I encourage anyone with a passion for blogging not to give up, as the rewards of sharing your voice with the world are well worth the effort.
All the wisdom you’ve shared today is sincerely appreciated. Before we go, can you tell us about the main challenge you are currently facing?
Right now, my primary focus is on rebuilding trust with my audience. I acknowledge that some of my past content was hurtful, and I sincerely apologize to anyone I offended. I took time away from my blog for self-reflection and personal growth, and this period has been invaluable in helping me understand the impact of my words and actions.
I believe in giving people the opportunity to learn from their mistakes. While cancel culture can sometimes be swift in its judgment, I hope that my commitment to genuine improvement will show that I am serious about evolving and becoming better. I am dedicated to earning back the trust of my readers by being more thoughtful and intentional in my content.
Moving forward, my goal is to reconnect with my audience and create a space where we can grow together. I look forward to opportunities such as receiving press passes, conducting interviews, and expanding my community. I appreciate the support of those who have stood by me, and I am committed to demonstrating that I have learned from my past as I continue to progress on this journey.
