Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Debra Mazer. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Debra, thanks so much for taking the time to share your insights and lessons with us today. We’re particularly interested in hearing about how you became such a resilient person. Where do you get your resilience from?
My resilience comes from a knowing that I’m here to do great things, to impact culture, to change the planet, and to be known; to tell my story, and impact people worldwide.
Giving up is not an option.
I’ve had 5 figure months, and I’ve had moments when I’ve had to put groceries back from my cart.
What keeps me focused is my Morning Practice. I journal, I meditate, I do breathwork. I express Gratitude. But more importantly, I have a conversation with my Inner Wise Self.* I know that when all goes to hell, there is always a new day to commune with Spirit and get my direction. GPS recalibration. That is why I know I will never give up. Even on days when I want to hate everything because things aren’t going my way.
I know I can always commune with Spirit and there is always a Next Indicated Step.
And the courage and belief that it’s got to work out. There is no other way.
Some would call that Faith.
Faith is not something I received from scripture, a church or synagogue. Faith is when reality doesn’t look like the Vision but I hold the Vision. Faith is learned through experience of the Universe’s Grace.
The Rainbow, The Sun after the storm.
When we learn the techniques to tune in, Faith is the Intuition that guides us. It’s the synchronicities. It’s the magic moments. It’s the next step that becomes clear.
Will we have the courage to act on it?
*Inner Wise Self is a term from one of my favorite authors, SARK.
Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?
As you can see from the title, I do lots of things. They all fall under three categories: Healer, Artist, Visionary.
I started my journey as a Raw Food Chef over 20 years ago. I worked for various Black-owned raw food restaurants in Atlanta. I helped open a Raw Food Restaurant in California. I started my own catering business, Vibrance, and graced the covers of the Atlanta Journal-Constitution in a 3-page cover article. I catered a dinner for Kris Carr. I worked in the kitchen at David Wolfe retreats in Hawaii and Arizona. I was the Kitchen Director of The Living Foods Institute in Atlanta for two years and taught raw food recipe classes full time. I moved to LA and vended raw food at Ecstatic Dance LA. I won The Best of Raw Awards for my Hot Love Chocolate Truffles (so good, if you haven’t tried them!) I catered yoga retreats for Shiva Rea for one year in Malibu, California.
I moved back to Atlanta in 2018 and worked full time for the Democratic Party for the Stacey Abrams Campaign. The quarantine happened. I met Rosario Dawson and became her Personal Chef while filming in Atlanta. I did more private Personal Chef work….
There is so much to my story! Way too much to share in this brief article.
So much magic, so much laughter, joy, and also hardships, mental health challenges (anxiety) and struggle. Lots of manifestations. Lots of beauty. Lots of Grace. Landing Spaces. Support.
I love Life Coaching, Psychic Readings, and Healing. In 2021 I launched my dream course, Frequency School. As I write this, I’m planning on bringing it back + better than ever. (Get on my email list at DebraMazer.com to stay in the loop!)
I’ve coached everyone from Clergy, to Artists, to CEO’s. I’ve helped people start nonprofits, find dream jobs, publish books, and release albums.
I am a student and teacher of The Artist’s Way.
Reiki actually came before Raw Food Chef. I became Reiki certified at age 23. And thereafter, my whole life changed. Reiki has powers.
When I moved to LA, I landed at my spiritual home, Agape, under the direction of Rev. Michael Beckwith. I am an Agape Prayer Warrior and sang in the Agape Choir under the direction of the phenomenal Rickie Byars. I’m also a Universal Life Church Minister, and I love officiating spiritual and creative weddings.
The Psychic thing started about 10 years ago. I was at a mediumship circle and the Medium told me I was Psychic. I started practicing on people with my oracle card decks, and sure enough, I was good. I now work for a Psychic Agency in Atlanta, as well as Keen, an online psychic hotline.
And of course, I’m a Book Author. After many years of spiritual search, I came back to my religion of origin, Judaism, to rewrite my version of a ritual guide for Passover. It’s alternative, it’s spiritual, it leaves Zionism out of the text. Vegetarian-friendly, of course! My book, Open-Eyed Heart-Wide Haggadah has been featured everywhere from traditional Jewish publications, to VegNews and Today.com.
Including recipe ebooks, I’ve written and self-published 8 books, and I’m working on my next two, a multimedia memoir, and a raw food recipe book I intend to publish with a major publisher.
With as much creativity as I have (raw food will do that), it helps to have support. I’ve been part of so many groups, and received coaching and accountability for my projects.
I also love to support others.
Please let me know if you’re looking for a Psychic Reading, some Life Coaching, Reiki on The Amethyst Biomat, Affirmative Prayer, Wedding Officiation, a high-end Plant-Based Personal Chef, or are a publishing company or agent interested in my book proposal.
I’m currently in Atlanta, but willing to travel and/ or relocate for the right opportunities.
I love traveling internationally as well! The more tropical fruit and coconuts, the better. And durian seals the deal (my favorite fruit). (Fresh figs take a close second.)
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
1) Fearlessness: Take what you want to do and put it out there. In 2004, I started Vibrance 4-course dinner parties at a private house. That led to the Vibrance Weekly Menu, that led to Kris Carr, and Shiva Rea, and so much more.
2) Get Support: Take a class. Get a Coach. Join a Group. Get Accountability.
3) Prioritize Going Within: When I have several plates spinning all at once, a menu to plan, and not sure what decision to make, I go within. Journaling, meditation, breathwork, channeling messages from my Inner Wise Self. Follow Spirit, learn to cultivate your Intuition, and allow it to guide you.
Everyone can tell you what to do, you can collect all the facts. And ultimately, the final answer will be found within.
I have a course coming up on Cultivating Your Intuition. Who is interested in taking it?? Such an important Life Skill we all need to learn!
As we end our chat, is there a book you can leave people with that’s been meaningful to you and your development?
My favorite book is The Fifth Sacred Thing by Starhawk.
I read it in 2000 while living on an ecovillage called Dancing Rabbit. At the time, I hated capitalism, and didn’t want to be part of the system, so I Iived and worked in various intentional communities across the country. Before this time, I also lived at Auroville Community in India for one month. After, another intentional community in Virginia called Twin Oaks. And I visited Earthaven Ecovillage near Asheville, where I ended up around September 11, 2001. Later in 2001, I would begin van life, purchasing a biodiesel VW Vanagon that I would travel and live in, while driving across the country.
But back to The Fifth Sacred Thing! I say all of this because this book is just as poignant in these times as it was back then. It’s a utopian science fiction story with some apocalypse themes. What I love is that the New Earth wins out in Starhawk’s book. And she poetically describes a world that is not only environmentally sustainable, racially and economically just, and culturally diverse, but also beautiful, and full of love, sensuality, and magic.
I still have my copy! Maybe time to re-read it! It gives victory and hope. I’m also waiting on the movie, The Fifth Sacred Thing, to come out! It’s in the works and I know it’s time!
