Meet Dedra Weiss

We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Dedra Weiss. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Dedra below.

Dedra, thank you so much for joining us. You are such a positive person and it’s something we really admire and so we wanted to start by asking you where you think your optimism comes from?

My optimism comes from slowing down and living in the moment. I’ve always been the most happy and optimistic when I practice slow-living and mindfulness. It is something that I’ve incorporated into my life before I even knew that there was a specific term for it. Engaging in activities that require patience and attention to detail like painting, drawing, writing poetry, bead weaving, spending quite time in nature, or tending to my garden brings me immense joy. These moments fill me with optimism for the task at hand as well as for what the future holds.

My life is certainly hectic and imperfect at times. But, when I get the sense of overwhelm, I remind myself to slow down and let creativity take over. This eventually led to the creation of my artistic vignette videos showcasing how I practice slow living through art and nature. As a content creator, I see each day as an opportunity to discover and share the little joys that often go unnoticed.

In my YouTube videos, @opalsandclovers, I try to capture the magic in everyday moments and creative processes—like the rhythm of a paintbrush, planting herbs in fragrant soil, or the tranquility of a quiet morning. I’ve always been the kind of person who looks at the glass as half full. I believe that by slowing down and being present, we can cultivate a mindset that seeks out positivity and gratitude.

Every comment, every shared experience from my community, reinforces my belief that there’s always something to be grateful for. Whether it’s the act of creating, connecting with others, or just enjoying life’s small pleasures, there’s an endless source of inspiration around me. That’s what fuels my optimism and keeps me excited to share this journey with others through my videos.

Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?

As a content creator, I focus on crafting artistic vignette videos that celebrate the beauty of slow living through art and nature. My passions for drawing, painting, beadweaving, gardening, herbalism, and spending time in nature all come together to create a serene and inspiring experience for my audience. I love capturing the delicate moments of everyday life—whether it’s the joy of nurturing a plant, the process of creating a piece of art, or the calming ritual of drying herbs.

My background as a compounding pharmacist and herbal information specialist deepens my understanding of the natural world and my connection to the plants I grow and often use in my art and videos. I’m able to share not only the aesthetic aspects of these experiences but also the knowledge behind herbalism when I make herbal preparations in my videos. My videos are meant to entertain, inspire, and relax my viewers, yet I follow the authentic techniques I’ve learned through my educational journey obtaining 6 college degrees ranging from associates to doctorate.

I believe that every brushstroke, every seed planted, and every moment spent in nature contributes to a larger narrative of mindfulness and well-being. My brand is all about embracing the small, meaningful moments in life and encouraging others to find joy in simplicity. I hope to inspire my viewers to cultivate their own creative practices and nurture a deeper connection to the world around them. Ultimately, it’s about celebrating the art of living thoughtfully and intentionally, one vignette at a time.

There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?

Looking back, the three qualities that have been most impactful in my journey are my artistic ability, my skill in blending creative processes with technology, and my early recognition of what truly brings me joy—slow living through art, beading, gardening, herbs, and time spent in nature.

1. Artistic Ability: Cultivating my artistic skills has been crucial. I’ve had to harness my creativity and artistic ability to create both my art and my videos, which took dedication and practice. For those early in your journey, it’s important to embrace your unique style and continually practice. My advice for those starting out is to allow yourself the freedom to explore and experiment without the pressure of perfection. Art taught me to appreciate imperfections, reminding me that life, much like a canvas, can be filled with vibrant colors even amidst chaos.

2. Combining Creativity with Technology: Learning how to merge my artistic vision with video editing and other technological processes has elevated my content. Understanding how to film and edit allowed me to bring my artistic vision to reality. For newcomers, I recommend dedicating time to understand all the tools for content creation. Learn how to fully complete the process from start to finish before sending it out to production assistants if outside help is your ultimate goal. Understanding the whole process will make your videos more authentic.

3. Recognizing Joy in Slow Living: Early on, I realized that slow living—rooted in activities that bring me contentment—was essential for my well-being. I encourage others to explore what brings them joy and to prioritize those activities. Whether it’s gardening, crafting, or simply spending time in nature, making space for these moments will enrich your creative journey.

What would you advise – going all in on your strengths or investing on areas where you aren’t as strong to be more well-rounded?

While I always try to maximize my strengths, I definitely feel that it’s better to try to be more well-rounded because developing new skill sets can lead to unexpected opportunities and growth. By improving areas where I’m weaker, I not only enhance my overall capabilities but also build emotional resilience and success.

Tackling these weaker areas can be uncomfortable and often makes me feel anxious or not confident. However, embracing that discomfort has helped me build character and resilience, ultimately benefiting other aspects of my life.

Focusing solely on strengths can sometimes create blind spots. For example, in my journey as a content creator, I initially excelled in artistic skills but struggled with video editing. Rather than just relying on my artistic talent, I decided to invest time in learning video editing programs and techniques. This opened up new avenues for my creativity and allowed me to present my art in a more engaging way. It also allowed me to be independent and not so reliant on others. The more I learned, the more my videos transformed, capturing the essence of slow living in a way that resonated deeply with my audience.
