We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Dee Evans. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Dee below.
Dee, looking forward to learning from your journey. You’ve got an amazing story and before we dive into that, let’s start with an important building block. Where do you get your work ethic from?
I come from a Caribbean background. I was raised to work hard and not give up from an early age. At the early age of 6, I was doing chores, cooking, cleaning, and laundry. It was instilled in me growing up that life was hard and I would have to work two times harder to achieve success. That just stuck with me transitioning into adulthood.
Where do I get my resilience from?
My resilience comes from my faith in Christ. I firmly believe that Christ does not put more on you than you can bear. I also have a strong foundation of support within my circle of loved ones.
How did you develop your confidence and self-esteem?
I developed my confidence and self-esteem through my successful results on each milestone. Every milestone I was able to complete built up my confidence in myself.
Where does your generosity come from? My generosity comes from my empathy and spirit of charity. I love helping others and believe my calling is to serve others. Anyway, that I can help someone, I try my best to be able to do so.
How did you overcome imposter syndrome? I cannot recall a time that I have experienced imposter syndrome. I worked hard for everything I have obtained thus far in my life. I am grateful before anything.
Being the only one in the room: how have you learned to be effective/successful even when you are the only one in the room that looks like you?In an environment where I am the only one who looks like me, I have learned to be an effective listener and a student. I believe in taking notes and obtaining as much knowledge as possible.
How have you overcome or persisted despite the challenges related to mental health issues?
I overcome challenges related to mental health by maintaining a positive attitude and mindset in every situation and understanding that there is good in every challenge we face. I believe in self-care, protecting my peace, creating boundaries, and taking it one day at a time. Many times in life, we try to juggle too much at once, and the outcomes put a mental strain on us.
How did you overcome a layoff and getting fired? My first experience getting laid off was 2014 when I worked for Yellow Pages. I had just accepted a promotion as a Business Development Manager, and I remember feeling devasted because I had no idea what I would do next. I was looking forward to moving forward within the company. After two weeks of mourning my first layoff, I updated my resume and started back interviewing. I land a new job within a month. Allowing myself to grieve and accept that it wasn’t personal helped me to pick myself back up.
How did you overcome or avoid burnout? I overcome burnout by taking each day one day at a time. To do that, I schedule out everything and maintain a couple of 15-30 mental breaks when I have a full schedule of meetings to prevent feeling overwhelmed throughout the day.
How have you overcome/beat Creativity Blocks (writers block, etc)?
I overcome writing and creativity blocks by journaling, reading poetry, and taking 24-hour mental breaks. If my brain feels blocked, it needs a reset, and I understand that. I use that time to tap back into myself.
What were the conditions that allowed you to develop your empathy?I feel like I have a natural gift of empathy. I am very understanding and want to see everyone reach success.
Where does your optimism come from? My optimism comes from my faith in Christ.
How did you find your purpose? I found my purpose through Jesus Christ and his word. I understand that I am his daughter, and he loves me. I was born with a purpose to serve him in everything I seek to do, and he will guide me.
How do you persist despite the haters, nay-sayers, etc? I can persist through the haters because they motivate me. If you don’t have haters, you are doing something wrong.
What do you do for self-care and what impact has it had on your effectiveness? For self-care, I pray three times daily, read my biblical scriptures, journal, recite poetry, and host two podcast shows, “Black Girls in Faith” and “Dee Poetry & Inspiration Podcast.”
Where does your self-discipline come from? My self-discipline comes from my faith in Christ and keeping his commandments/laws to the best of my ability.
How did you develop your ability to communicate effectively?
I developed my ability to communicate effectively by being an effective listener. It is essential to hush and listen. People will tell you everything you need to know when you Listen.
Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?

If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
Three qualities, skills, and areas of knowledge that had the greatest impact on my journey were 1. Maintaining a positive mindset daily, 2. Staying persistent no matter the results, and 3. Learning from my mistakes.
You can improve by setting boundaries and holding yourself accountable daily with a smile.
Before we go, any advice you can share with people who are feeling overwhelmed?
When I feel overwhelmed I take a step back to self-examine and re-evaluate my current strategy. I spend more time with the Most High in prayer and reading my scriptures. I learned to take on my challenges one day at a time while leaning on faith in Christ through it all. Nothing happens before it’s supposed to and everything happens for a reason. I try to learn from every situation I endure.
