Meet Delanie Fischer

We were lucky to catch up with Delanie Fischer recently and have shared our conversation below.

Delanie , first a big thank you for taking the time to share your thoughts and insights with us today. I’m sure many of our readers will benefit from your wisdom, and one of the areas where we think your insight might be most helpful is related to imposter syndrome. Imposter syndrome is holding so many people back from reaching their true and highest potential and so we’d love to hear about your journey and how you overcame imposter syndrome.

I don’t think I’ll ever fully overcome imposter syndrome, since I’m someone who loves to try new things. However, here’s something that helps me relieve imposter syndrome when it creeps in:

~ The Confidence Catalog ~

I keep a list in the notes app of my phone that I’ve named my “Confidence Catalog,” but call yours whatever you want! It’s filled with projects I’ve done, kind words people have said about my work, philanthropical goals, and anything else that reminds me that I’m allowed to experience new opportunities, and I don’t have to be perfect to be worthy of them. Sometimes you just need a quick reminder about your experience, qualifications, results, and/or values before an important meeting, event, or starting a project. Add anything to this list that gives you a quick boost of confidence and courage — testimonials, quotes, awards, accomplishments, intentions, etc.

Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?

I’ve built my career based on 3 things —comedy, activism, and working remotely. It’s been important for me to have a creative job, give back, and craft my own schedule from home. There’s of course exceptions, and it hasn’t been perfect over the years, but these ideals have kept me grounded as I filter new ideas, projects, and career opportunities.

I’m the host of The Self-Helpless Podcast, comedy writer, and social media free entrepreneur. My background is in stand-up and sketch comedy, screenwriting, and painting penis caricatures on coffee mugs (pretty nuts, pun intended). My personal mission is to blend comedy and activism in everything I do — as a host of a personal growth podcast, writer for one of the biggest non-profits in the world, and as someone who is always excited about working on a new passion project— be it a book, film, or punching up a friend’s wedding toast. Speaking of passion projects…

My first book launches in December of 2024! This gift book is perfect for your plant-based pals, non-drinking buddies, and the literary lovers in your life. Basically, if you like fun drinks and way too many puns, you’ll be into it.

Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?

Everyone has different goals, but these have served me well for mine:

Outreach — the power of sending one well-crafted message has taken me years to refine, and has supported me more than anything else. It’s enabled me to generate revenue without ads or social media (which I permanently deleted a few years back), book inspiring people on my podcast, and land opportunities I had thought were out of reach. With digital mass media marketing at the forefront of entrepreneur culture, my advice would be not to neglect 1-1 interaction. Hone your pitching skills, and those will transfer to any medium you want.

Rebranding — as someone who has navigated many transitions in my career, I’ve become an expert at rebranding myself, so much so that my friends call me, “queen of the pivot.” My approach to a rebrand is to, not only communicate it on my website, etc., but to also share why I’ve made this decision with my community. For example, I openly discussed on my podcast that I was leaving stand-up comedy because the lifestyle was making me incredibly depressed, and I was determined to figure out how I could become a stay-at-home comedian instead. This led to the launch of my humorous novelty gift business at the time, and an inbox full of orders from people who wanted to support my pivot. When you clue people in to a change, they feel connected to you, show up to cheer you on, and it gives them permission to be vulnerable during transitions in their own lives.

Write It Down —I’ve struggled with having too many ideas and interests, and feeling the urgency to act on all of them as soon as possible. So fun being a creative, right? I’ve learned to write all of my ideas down (even the very dumb ones) and tell myself that I can work on them later when it’s their time (this is yet another list I have in the notes app of my phone). It’s a way for me to tend to the never-ending ideas I have for businesses, books, podcast episodes, products, TV shows, films, sketches, taglines, etc. — without derailing what my priority must be at that respective time. One of my favorite things about working on a current project is getting to use, or repurpose, ideas I wrote down years prior. This quote helps me tremendously, so perhaps it’ll help you too. “You can do anything, but you can’t do everything” — or as I like to add, at least not all at once.

One of our goals is to help like-minded folks with similar goals connect and so before we go we want to ask if you are looking to partner or collab with others – and if so, what would make the ideal collaborator or partner?

I want to collaborate with podcasters, filmmakers, and brands who effect positive change for people, animals, and the environment. Whether you’d like to submit to be featured on my podcast as a guest or sponsor, you’d like to have me on your panel or platform to discuss comedy, activism, or building an unconventional career (and life), or you’re in need of a comedy writer or actor for a project, I’d love to hear from you. I’d especially like to chat if you’re involved in the vegan space.
