We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Delatria Sam a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Delatria , thanks so much for taking the time to share your insights and lessons with us today. We’re particularly interested in hearing about how you became such a resilient person. Where do you get your resilience from?
As a writer and new author, I’d say my resilience comes from my life experiences, including overcoming challenges and adversity. Growing up in The South, facing personal losses, and navigating the book publishing industry have all contributed to my resilience. My work in clinical research has taught me the importance of perseverance and attention to detail. Additionally, my journey as a new cancer writer, health and medicine magazine writer, and soon to be children’s book author has shown me the value of resilience in communicating complex information in a clear and compelling way. As a new poet, I’ve also learned to tap into my creativity and express myself in unique and powerful ways. As a health advocate, I’m driven to make a positive impact on people’s lives, and as a new entrepreneur, I’m excited to bring my ideas to life. Through these experiences, I’ve developed a strong passion for storytelling, helping others, and empowering my community, which motivates me to continue pushing forward despite obstacles.
Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?
As a passionate health advocate, author, and writer, I am excited to share my story with you. Professionally, I am focused on using my writing to make a positive impact on people’s lives, particularly in the health and medicine sector. My recently published #1 bestselling memoir, “Echoes of the Pandemic: A Story of Heartache, Loss, and Resilience,” is a testament to my commitment to storytelling.
What I find most exciting about my work is the opportunity to connect with readers and share stories that inspire hope and resilience. As a cancer writer and health and medicine magazine writer, I’m constantly learning about new developments in the medical field and finding ways to communicate complex information in a way that’s accessible to everyone.
As a new entrepreneur, I’m also excited to launch new projects and initiatives that showcase my passion for storytelling and health advocacy. One of my upcoming projects is a children’s book, which I’m excited to bring to life soon.
In addition to my writing, I’m dedicated to using my platform to amplify the voices of others and promote health awareness. I’m looking forward to continuing to grow my brand and explore new opportunities, including potential collaborations and speaking engagements.
What’s special about my brand is the focus on storytelling and empathy. I believe that everyone has a story to tell, and I’m committed to utilize my writing to create a sense of connection. I’m excited to see where this journey takes me and how I can continue to make a positive impact on the world.
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
Reflecting on my journey, I’d say the three most impactful qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge have been:
1. I have an Indomitable spirit. My determination and perseverance have allowed me to push through pain, real-life challenges while staying focused on my goals, even in the face of adversity, even when others have doubted me, even when others were always negative and unsupportive.
2. Resilience and adaptability. Dealing with personal losses, dealing with a health scare, facing the COVID-19 pandemic, working as a healthcare worker during the COVID-19 pandemic, experiencing unexpected job layoffs, changing routines, working in a challenging yet rewarding profession, experiencing a heartache, fighting through pain, and stepping up as someone’s responsible representative have all required me to be resilient and adaptable. These traits have helped me to persevere through challenges and stay focused on my goals.
3. Tenacious work ethic. My tenacity has driven me to continuously learn, grow, and push beyond my limits, enabling me to take
on new projects and pursue opportunities with dedication and enthusiasm. I have a tenacious work ethic that gives me the ability to excel in different roles and get promoted quickly because of my hard work, dedication and leadership.
For those early in their journey, I’d advise:
– Developing an indomitable spirit. Believe in yourself and your abilities, and don’t be afraid to take risks and face challenges head-on. Surround yourself with positivity, but also learn to stay motivated even when faced with negativity.
– Cultivate resilience and adaptability. Be prepared to face setbacks and learn to pivot when necessary. Prioritize self-care and develop coping strategies to manage stress.
– Embody tenacity. Be relentless in pursuing your goals and passions. Continuously seek out opportunities to learn and grow, and stay committed to your vision.
By embracing these qualities, you’ll be well-equipped to navigate your journey and achieve success in your chosen field.
We’ve all got limited resources, time, energy, focus etc – so if you had to choose between going all in on your strengths or working on areas where you aren’t as strong, what would you choose?
I believe it’s essential to strike a balance between leveraging your strengths and improving areas where you’re not as strong. Here’s why,
When you focus on your strengths, you can achieve great success and build confidence. As a writer, I’ve honed my skills in storytelling, and it’s allowed me to connect with readers and convey complex information in a compelling way. By leveraging my strengths, I’ve been able to publish my new memoir and build a career as a health and medicine writer, reaching readers from diverse backgrounds, including the UK, Brazil, Canada, and beyond. I’ve also expanded my reach to a team and network in Europe, and became a new cancer writer, which has been a fulfilling experience.
However, neglecting areas where you’re not as strong can limit your growth and opportunities. For instance, as a new entrepreneur and new author, I’ve had to develop skills in marketing, social media, and networking. I’ve learned how to network effectively, which has opened doors to new opportunities and connections. I’ve collaborated with several other organizations, introducing myself and my work to new audiences. My writing has been featured in a new anthology book that launched in June, which has helped me reach an even broader readership. Recently, I’ve improved my networking skills further by appearing on two podcast shows, which has helped me reach a wider audience and build relationships with like-minded professionals.
Trying to be more well-rounded doesn’t mean becoming a master of everything. It’s about being aware of your weaknesses and working to improve them enough to support your strengths. This balanced approach has helped me navigate challenges and achieve my goals.
One relevant story that comes to mind is when I was working on my memoir. I knew I needed to improve my skills in editing and proofreading to ensure the quality of my work. Although it wasn’t my strongest suit, I invested time and effort in learning and practicing these skills. The result was a polished manuscript that resonated with readers.
In conclusion, I believe it’s crucial to focus on your strengths while also investing effort in improving areas where you’re not as strong. By striking this balance, you can achieve success, build confidence, and continue growing and developing as a professional.
