We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Delvin Barnes a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Delvin, so good to have you with us today. We’ve always been impressed with folks who have a very clear sense of purpose and so maybe we can jump right in and talk about how you found your purpose?
I’ve always been an avid anime fan ever 1996. I wanted the latest merchandise of my favorite anime series and shows, but they were only sold oversees and not in the sizes for their U.S. fans. So, I’ve decided to do something about it. The name of my business is Kidd’s Playground, and it is an Anime T-shirt and Apparel store. I run my business in Houston, TX, and the main reason why I decided to start this particular business is I see a lot of online anime stores that #1 Isn’t based in the U.S. and #2 That doesn’t offer sizes for the Big and Tall or for the Plus Size people. The world needs to know that we are here and here to stay. I stay in a city where Anime is hugely loved and adored, and we have people in all shapes and sizes that are looking to show off our love and devotion to Anime.
Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?
The brand Kidd’s Playground is a brand you can trust to fulfill your wants/needs/desire to show off your love for Anime. We offer T-shirts Long and Short sleeve as well as your hoodies. Our printed designs will last as long as the fabric does and will not fade or peel because of washer and/or dryer use. Where I stand alone in the anime apparel shop family is #1, I’m a black entrepreneur #2 My store front in U.S. based, and #3, I offer sizes from XS to 5XL.
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
The qualities/ skills that I have that mostly impacted my journey is 1. I’m a professional Photoshop user that helps with my designs for my merch. 2. My patience; their can be days that I don’t make a sale or even get views in my store, but having that patience to know that they will come much sooner that later helps me tremendously. 3. My love of anime helps me move forward. Like they say, “If you love what you do, you’ll never work a day in your life” and I keep that to heart. My advice is “A goal without a plan is just a wish” – setting goals and making plans can help make dreams more realistic and achievable.
If you knew you only had a decade of life left, how would you spend that decade?
I truly see it’s hard to run and maintain a business where you have to catch the client/customer’s attention and show that they can trust you, your word, and your Brand for their Anime needs. I’m an Air Force Veteran and Anime Fan that wants to share his love to the world.
