Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Demetrice Chance. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Demetrice , so good to have you with us today. We’ve always been impressed with folks who have a very clear sense of purpose and so maybe we can jump right in and talk about how you found your purpose?
I initially went to college right after high school because it was the expected path. However, I soon got off track and started making poor choices. The turning point came when I ended up in jail. When I got out, the very next morning, I heard a voice tell me, “leave.” So, I returned to my hometown of Dallas, TX to start fresh. I moved in with my mom, and every day I rode the train searching for a job, telling myself, “I have to find my purpose.” I couldn’t just keep working aimlessly now that I hadn’t finished college. I began reflecting on who I was as a child, because I believe our purpose is tied to who we are when we’re young. As we grow older, the world can pull us away from that purpose. I’ve always known I was wise—when I was 11, my aunt had a car accident, and I told my father, “Aunt Sandra had a wreck because she needed a new car.” He passed this on to her, and she said, “He’s going to be a preacher.” That moment made me realize my purpose was to share wisdom with the world, which is why I began writing spiritual self-help books.

Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?
I write Spiritual Self Help books. I consider my writing “Ghetto Gospel”, because I can use an example what the Bible says on one page and an example of what a rapper says on another page. As a child gospel music didn’t move me, but when I would listen to rap music from some of my favorite artists such as Tupac, Young Jeezy, Lil Boosie, UGM, 8Ball & MJG just to name a few. Some of the things they said in songs made me think of bible verses. It’s just the way my brain operates and I think God for the gift. I think my way of spreading God’s Word from the bible, rap music, and my life can attract people that the church may not be able to attract. I just released my 4th book – Book of Philosophies #2 in January of this year.
My mission is to inspire people to become the best versions of themselves; not what their family, friends, or religion want them to be.
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
The three most important skills for me were self awareness, critical thinking, and perseverance. Self awareness is important, because without knowing who you are, you cannot progress. Everyone has a lane and self awareness creates the lane. Secondly, I used critical thinking to look things from all perspectives to guide my writing. Critical thinking gives us explanations to what we already believe. Lastly, perseverance was a major, because of writer’s block and other obstacles that could’ve prevented me finishing my books. You have to know you’re going to finish regardless. I told myself early on that no one was going to stop me from writing but God.

We’ve all got limited resources, time, energy, focus etc – so if you had to choose between going all in on your strengths or working on areas where you aren’t as strong, what would you choose?
I believe it’s better to go all out on our strengths, because our weaknesses are our weaknesses and it will always be second to society from our weaknesses. No matter how we get better at our weaknesses, they will always be our weaknesses. Attempting to become well-rounded will diminish pur light, because we won’t be known for anything in particular; never creating a solid foundation to stand on. When we maximize our strengths we shine the greatest we can shine and that shine over shadows our weaknesses as if they don’t exist. When we look at people we consider great, we don’t even think about areas they’re weak in, because it doesn’t matter. They’re great because of their strengths, not for being well rounded.
