Meet DEMETRIO

We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful DEMETRIO. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with DEMETRIO below.

DEMETRIO, thanks so much for taking the time to share your insights and lessons with us today. We’re particularly interested in hearing about how you became such a resilient person. Where do you get your resilience from?

I was raised by immigrant parents who came to the U.S. with just one suitcase between them and my brother. Seeing how hard they worked for things that others seemed to get so easily gave me an entirely different understanding of resilience. My family’s always been stubborn in the best way. When we set our minds to something, it gets done. Being brought up in such a surrounding influenced my approach towards challenges and is the reason I’m so persistent.

Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?

I’m DEMETRIO, a Brazilian-American artist from Orlando, Florida, now based in LA! I blend R&B, Latin, and jazz, pulling a lot of inspiration from classic Brazilian songs. Using my family name as my stage name, I tell our stories — things we’ve lived through and that I know a lot of people can relate to.

I love storytelling. At the moment, I’m working on an album called “AKRASIA”, which is a story about self-love. I want each song to build on the other as the tracks go on, but it’s still important to me that each song can stand on its own. The production on the album also expresses this sentiment. I use R&B, jazz, and Latin music as the backbone of the album. I’m incredibly proud of it!

Ultimately, I want people to connect with my music in their own way. While each of my songs carries a personal meaning for me, I hope listeners have their own interpretations as well. Whether they’re actively listening or letting the music play in the background, what matters most to me is that it sparks some kind of feeling.

DEMETRIO represents the stories and feelings my family and I have carried, and I aim to keep expressing them. FALA COMIGO!!

Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?

Adaptability, awareness, and persistence would for sure be the three qualities that have helped me out the most when it comes to my music.

Moving from Orlando to Los Angeles took a second to get used to. Central Florida’s a big place, but it’s all mostly spread out by suburbs and smaller communities, which is very different from how LA is set up. I had to get used to how stuff worked around here, especially since I moved out here not knowing a single soul. I had to adjust to a new city, new people, and a faster pace. It pushed me to go outside more, build new connections, and stay open to growth.

For awareness, the more I understood myself, my family, and the stories that shaped us, the easier it became to put words on paper. The easier it became to turn melodies into verses and ideas into full songs. When I struggled the most with my sense of self, I had a very difficult time expressing myself since I felt stuck. But over time (and with support from friends!) I worked through that and learned to accept who I am. That’s done wonders for me creatively.

I learned early that life is not always fair, but pushing forward makes a difference. There were many times things did not happen right away, in music and in life, and what kept me going was refusing to quit. My advice would be, don’t worry about moving slowly; stay curious, stay open, and remember that even small steps forward matter.

How can folks who want to work with you connect?

Yeah, definitely! I’m always open to partnering and collabing with new people. I would love to work with a producer or mixer who sees music the way I do. My sound is influenced by a bunch of artists like Daniel Caesar, Kali Uchis, Omar Apollo, Joji, Conan Gray, Jorge Ben Jor, JID, Kendrick Lamar, and so many others.

I love producing my own music, but I’m always down to work with someone who brings a fresh ear and energy! I would also love to find a consistent mixer I can trust and grow with, someone who really understands the vision.

If anyone would like to connect, here’s the best way to reach out!
