Meet Demetrius Manouselis

Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Demetrius Manouselis. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.

Hi Demetrius, really happy you were able to join us today and we’re looking forward to sharing your story and insights with our readers. Let’s start with the heart of it all – purpose. How did you find your purpose?

I became seriously interested in painting after reading a comment by Arnold Schoenberg: “I have the desire to paint”.
It was after I graduated architecture school and begun to visit New York museums and galleries.

Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?

I am an architect become painter. After or coinciding with an architectural practice I began to paint in the mid-80s.
I found that the two practices informed each other.
The paintings have an architectural structuring and my architectural interiors have had painterly features.

Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?

As a painter reading monographs, biographies, art history and art criticism has enriched my perspective, processes and ideas about painting.

Alright, so before we go we want to ask you to take a moment to reflect and share what you think you would do if you somehow knew you only had a decade of life left?

Working and creating new work is always challenging.
After 30 or so years of painting entering the studio feels everytime as the first
encounter with painting. There are, of course, barren even intimidating moments and there are fruitful fullfilling days while working. It is a challenge every time but usually a happy result.
