Meet Demetrius Washington

We recently connected with Demetrius Washington and have shared our conversation below.

Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?
In my role as the Head of Implementation at Enterprise Payment Solutions, I orchestrate the seamless delivery of SmartPay, ACH, and Ensenta products to financial institutions, overseeing installation teams and project coordinators. Beyond my corporate responsibilities, I wear many hats within the company, serving as the president of Mosaic of People—a business resource group dedicated to fostering cultural inclusion. As a fervent advocate for diversity, equity, and inclusion (DE&I), I contribute to ethical standards, champion customer experiences, and act as a purpose ambassador, driving financial health for all.

One aspect I find particularly rewarding is my role as a people leader, where I derive immense satisfaction from coaching and developing others. Jack Henry’s ethos aligns seamlessly with my values, providing opportunities for me to make meaningful contributions that resonate with my personal brand.

Outside the corporate realm, my commitment to community engagement is evident in my roles as the president of the National Black MBA Association DFW Chapter and ForbesBLK Local Advisor for Dallas. These positions allow me to channel my passion for financial inclusion, Black professional growth, and wealth-building entrepreneurship into tangible initiatives that give back.

This year marked the launch of my consulting practice, focusing on operational excellence and social impact with a strong emphasis on diversity, equity, and inclusion in business. This venture has already garnered attention, leading to speaking engagements and awards. Looking ahead to 2024 and 2025, I am enthusiastic about the foundation I’m building and the transformative projects in the pipeline. The unfolding journey brings me great happiness, and I eagerly anticipate sharing more in the new year.

Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
Reflecting on my journey, three qualities stand out as pivotal contributors to my success. Firstly, self-assurance has been instrumental. Raised with a commitment to excellence, I’ve navigated corporate spaces where faces like mine are scarce. This demanded confidence, decisiveness, and exceptional delivery without being perceived as arrogant or “angry.” Seeking support from communities like the National Black MBA Association provided essential mentorship and a network of role models, aiding my growth.

Secondly, focusing on my personal brand proved crucial. While humility was instilled in me, relying solely on education and hard work didn’t guarantee success. I learned to unlearn this and actively communicate my aspirations and expectations to superiors, ensuring they understood my value as a leader.

Lastly, effective networking goes beyond superficial connections. Early in one’s career, cultivating authentic relationships is key. Genuine connections, not driven by ulterior motives, have been the foundation of my growth. Authenticity, rather than self-promotion, has opened doors, with advocates championing my cause even when I’m not present.

In conclusion, my advice is to find supportive communities, build a strong personal brand, and prioritize authentic relationships. These elements formed the bedrock of my success in the dynamic world of business.

As we end our chat, is there a book you can leave people with that’s been meaningful to you and your development?
Throughout my academic journey in business and grad school, my home office has become a haven for a myriad of books that have shaped my thinking. While I’ve delved into numerous impactful reads, one book stands out as a guiding beacon in my professional development—*The Leadership Challenge* by Kouzes and Posner.

Early in my leadership journey, I was recognized as a next-generation leader and invited to join the Leadership Experience Action Program (LEAP). This transformative 9-month initiative immersed us in small groups, collaborating with local nonprofits to deliver impactful business solutions. The culmination involved presenting our learnings and nonprofit projects to corporate executives. What made this experience even more memorable was me being the only solo presenter in the history of the program, as unforeseen circumstances led my last remaining teammate to withdraw just days before our final presentation. This unique experience deepened my connection with The Leadership Challenge.

Two years later, I returned to LEAP as a mentor, emphasizing the enduring impact of the program and the book. The chapters on fostering collaboration and strengthening others resonated profoundly with me.

Foster Collaboration
–Leadership thrives in teamwork, not isolation.
–Collaboration is vital for achieving extraordinary results in organizations.
–Exemplary leaders prioritize creating value over defeating competitors.
–Active listening fosters attentive communication.
–Achieving extraordinary goals relies on mutual dependence within a community.
–Successful cooperation requires tasks designed for unique contributions.
–Action is influenced not just by knowledge but also by our identity and connections.

Strengthen Others
–Leaders must cultivate a culture emphasizing individual excellence.
–Empowerment comes from giving away power.
–Choices strengthen commitment and impact leadership.
–Empowered individuals produce remarkable results.
–Individual accountability is crucial for collaborative success.
–Removing a sense of “they” promotes self-directed action.
–Recognition is essential for gaining influence and power.

These principles have become the cornerstone of my leadership style, influencing the various organizations I have the privilege of leading. As I look ahead to 2024, these invaluable nuggets of wisdom continue to guide my journey as a servant leader.
