We recently connected with Demi Williams and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Demi, thank you for joining us today and sharing your experiences and acquired wisdom with us. Burnout is a huge topic these days and so we’d love to kick things off by discussing your thoughts on overcoming or avoiding burnout
Burnout is never a good way to remain successful and at one point in my career, i believed that always being “booked and busy” was the key to having a successful business. I am here to say that it is not. During the beginning stage of my business, i worked as a cosmetology apprentice and assistant. I remember always feeling burnt out, complaining about having little to no time outside of my job to spend with my son, and feeling like i had no lifestyle outside of work to just have fun. Those feelings allowed me to gain more clarity on what i wanted my desired lifestyle to be and for me that looked like, having more time to spend quality time with my child, having the full ability to choose what days and times of the week i would like to service clients, and to be able to be available to attend friends and family events/trips without declining due to my work schedule. Fast forward, i moved into my own salon suite in 2020 during the peak of the pandemic to run my own business as a solo artist. This transition allowed me to become the CEO of my own life and business without feeling burnt out. I will say that during the first few months of running my business solo, i did service clients for long hours nearly 7 days a week. I loved the idea of being on my own and the increased profit of it all. However, I began to feel burnt out once again and had to remind myself that i am now the CEO of my business and that i do not have to continue to run my business like i once did before. Once reality kicked in, i decided to finally sit down and map out my hours and days of operation, including days off. Doing this, really allowed me to not only have free time but to practice self care and learn how to monetize in my business in other ways that do not require me to be physically present.
Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?
I am a licensed senior cosmetologist and a 2 year award winning pro makeup artist with 9 years of experience in the beauty industry. I operate both a hair and makeup business, Demistyles Beauty Bar and MWBeautyArtistry. I specialize in healthy hair care, wig design, hair extension services, bridal makeup artistry and other special occasional makeup glams. What is most exciting about my career is the ability to make women look and feel their best through hair or makeup enhancements. I love providing a solution to my consumers problems and overall providing a memorable experience that makes them feel confident and build trust in my brand to become a returning client. My business MWBeautyArtistry offers cosmetic products, lip shines and liquid matte lipsticks that are long-lasting, providing beautiful pigment and hydrating features. We are currently working on rebranding and relaunching our luxury lash strips, coming soon.
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
The 3 qualities/skills that were impactful in my journey are:
1. Allows being attentive to clients needs or concerns.
2. Investing in a business coach – this helped me grow tremendously in business, beginning with the power of mindset.
3. Investing in other classes or courses with other beauty professionals- This allowed for areas to improve my artistry skills and to expand my service offers or area of interest.
The advice that i would like to share to anyone who is early in their journey is to always be a student! Be open to learning no matter what license or certification you’ve obtained. There is always room to grow.
Great Customer Service and professionalism goes a very long way. It is the key to growing and gaining your clientele.
Surround yourself around winners and with people that will help you grow, inspire and uplift you in a positive way. Who you surround yourself with really does have a huge impact on your success. This goes for friends and family as well.
Who is your ideal client or what sort of characteristics would make someone an ideal client for you?
My ideal client is a busy professional woman that values her time. She is confident, self assured, and takes pride in her appearance. She seeks time saving solutions that allows her to look and feel her best both during the day and night, without compromising her busy schedule.
