Meet Denice Martin-Thompson

We recently connected with Denice Martin-Thompson and have shared our conversation below.

Denice, thrilled to have you on the platform as I think our readers can really benefit from your insights and experiences. In particular, we’d love to hear about how you think about burnout, avoiding or overcoming burnout, etc.

I turned 45 on March 6, 2024, and I realized a few things as I checked into my hotel for the weekend. I was exhausted, and even though I was excited about this new milestone in my life, I was fully aware that the 45-year-old woman didn’t want to continue on the current trajectory of her life. I arrived at the hotel before my husband, and after settling into my thoughts, I knew that I needed to engage in some soul care to make it through this season of my life without burnout.

I decided to continue my healing journey at The American Dream Mall. I didn’t have a lot of cash to spend that weekend, but the energy in that mall was contagious, and I knew being there would spark the flame I needed to light my way. I wore my finest pearl necklace with matching earrings and a white netted dress and waited for my chauffeur, aka my husband, to take me to my dreamland. I packed my tripod and phone because I knew this photoshoot would be memorable. Why does taking pictures make me so happy? I don’t know, but seeing myself as a work of art that should be honored brings me joy.

That weekend, I laid the foundation for the healing journey that I am currently on. I took that time to reassess the things and people in my life. I understood that I was ready for more, and to get all I deserved, I had to attend to my needs closely. I needed more T.E.A. Time, Energy, & Attention that was worth sharing with myself daily, even when I was at work. Taking breaks behind a closed door, taking an afternoon walk/ jog, talking to my sisters, and releasing the day was part of my new prescription for my soul, and it was working. Instead of burnout, I got a greater sense of myself; my self-awareness and ability to tend to my needs were now on my radar without fear or regrets. I was worth saving, and this healing journey was worth taking this season.

Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?

“Our relationship with ourselves must shift, and it begins when we decide we are worth the T.E.A.”

There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?

Writing, motivational speaking, and researching were the three most impactful skills I acquired on my journey. I have always believed in the power of the pen, and writing has become my most significant form of therapy. I advocate for writing because I’ve experienced words’ liberating and transformative power. Researching goes hand in hand with writing, and people who want the information don’t feel they have the time to attain it. Google has spoiled us, destroying our desire to dig deep for ourselves. My work as a coach always leads me back to the pages of a book, where I read and rise and then write, hoping to inspire and share my knowledge with others. My passion for reading, the arts, and writing infuses everything I create. The cover of My Writer’s Notebook tells a story before you turn the first page, and that’s my attitude and energy towards everything that I do. Do it with passion, or don’t do it at all.

I advise beginning entrepreneurs to have a clear vision about what they want and then drill in deep. Focus on that one thing without the pressure to multitask. Take your time and remember that slow and steady is a great pace when building a legacy that will flow from your business.

All the wisdom you’ve shared today is sincerely appreciated. Before we go, can you tell us about the main challenge you are currently facing?

I am currently facing the challenge of maintaining a teaching career while answering the call to be an entrepreneur. I am starting small and dreaming big. I am currently working with a few clients to establish a sustainable rhythm and blueprint for how I want Dee’s Passion Filled Experience to flow and grow. I also maximize my weekends and summer vacations, seeking opportunities to partner with others and to work as a consultant.
