We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Denzel Ortega. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Denzel below.
Hi Denzel, thank you for being such a positive, uplifting person. We’ve noticed that so many of the successful folks we’ve had the good fortune of connecting with have high levels of optimism and so we’d love to hear about your optimism and where you think it comes from.
One of the biggest challenges of life is learning to look forward, and that was one of the hardest things to learn especially in the tattoo industry.
My optimism would definitely come from all of my supporters, friends, family, clients, everyone who stands by my side rooting me on from the sidelines telling me that no matter what life throws my way, it’ll all work out in the end.
Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?
My name is Denzel,
You see, I am a fully self taught tattoo artist based out of Colorado, I found my fascination with tattooing in the closet of an apartment at the ripe age of 11 years old when my father got a Denver broncos tattoo from a cousin of mine.
I find in my industry the most exciting thing about tattooing is the next project, the concept of creation and what is next for my artistic abilities because no matter how long you’ve been doing this, there’s always a new challenge.
The composition, the type of skin and texture of the canvas you’re working on. Bringing originality to your clients and giving them something truly one of a kind.
The challenge of getting over the thoughts of “what if they don’t like it” bringing confidence to your art and making something you know someone can’t resist.
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
As far as qualities and skills when it comes to the tattoo world, the biggest skill is bringing your art and expression of your own style to life. Never hide who you are and what you are passionate about as far as design style goes. With that being said. You have to learn the quality of not being a people pleaser because no one can do everything under the sun, and you have to accept that. Those who appreciate your art will come and they will follow because you have to remember, you’re you and people come to you for your art.
Lastly, the biggest and third quality to have as an artist, is never give up, keep going and keep creating.
Those who are new to the industry need to know that you will have many obstacles to face but when it comes to the art, stay passionate about your art, your style, and never let anyone tell you that your art isn’t good enough because there is someone out there in this world who will love your art more than anyone. Don’t try to please those who turn eyes at your art. Instead show them that no matter that they say, you’ll persevere past their glances and find your audience. That’s what I did, and I’ll continue to represent myself rather than those who may turn away and no longer show interest in you or your art.
Okay, so before we go, is there anyone you’d like to shoutout for the role they’ve played in helping you develop the essential skills or overcome challenges along the way?
The biggest help in my life, has been my family, my Dad Joey and my Mom’s Amie and Melissa.
Each of my parents although in different families, all support me equally, being here for me no matter what happens in my life and career.
My dad’s family, showed me how to be optimistic and compassionate in life, to always give full energy and heart and soul I put into every project I work on. How to keep going and looking forward to what the future holds.
My mom’s family showed me strength and how to be strong in a world where hate lurks in every corner. To never let anyone say I can’t do it and that when life knocks you down, you fight back.
These are all the qualities I think anyone should have but I’m so lucky my family
