Meet Deon Lawton

Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Deon Lawton. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.

Deon, thanks so much for taking the time to share your insights and lessons with us today. We’re particularly interested in hearing about how you became such a resilient person. Where do you get your resilience from?

My resilience comes from the vast range of knowledge and experiences I’ve learned as well as the ability to adapt and refine my responses based on feedback. If something doesn’t land right, I treat it as a learning opportunity to get closer to what I need next time. Plus, I have infinite patience / mistakes and challenges just mean I have a new way to improve.

Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?

As a hairstylist, my journey is all about blending artistry with personal connection. Every client is like a canvas with unique hair texture, color, and style preferences, and my role is to bring out the beauty and confidence in each one. What excites me most is that styling isn’t just about aesthetics; it’s about transformation and helping people see themselves in new ways. There’s something deeply fulfilling in watching someone’s face light up when they feel great about their look.

My brand revolves around authenticity and individuality. I want each client to feel that their style is truly their own, not just a trend. I focus on education as well, helping clients learn how to care for and style their hair at home.

New developments, I’m considering rolling out an exclusive line of eco-friendly hair care products, each one formulated for different hair types and textures, while being gentle on the environment. Plus, I look forward to hosting styling workshops and events, where clients could learn techniques directly from me, ensuring their hair looks fantastic between appointments.

If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?

1. Creativity: Hair styling is as much an art as it is a skill. Every client has their own vibe, and part of the magic is in interpreting that and bringing it to life. Creativity lets you push boundaries and explore new techniques, whether through cuts, colors, or overall styling.
• How to build it: Creativity thrives with inspiration. Get into the habit of observing styles around you, experimenting with different techniques, and following a wide range of artists, from other stylist to photographers. Diversifying your sources of inspiration can help you bring something unique to your work.
2. Empathy: Listening and understanding a client’s needs is at the heart of building trust. Empathy allows you to hear and see what a client might not explicitly say, which is key for creating a look that truly resonates with them.
• How to build it: Start by focusing on active listening and being fully present in conversations. Practice reading between the lines and observing body language—these skills are invaluable for creating a comfortable experience for clients and building rapport.
3. Adaptability: Trends shift, techniques evolve, and no two clients have the same hair. Being adaptable means you’re always open to learning and willing to grow, even if it means moving out of your comfort zone.
• How to build it: Stay on top of industry trends by investing in ongoing education, whether through courses, tutorials, or even shadowing more experienced stylists. Embrace challenges as learning opportunities, and don’t be afraid to experiment with new tools or techniques.

For anyone early in their journey, embracing these three traits can set the foundation for both skill and satisfaction in the work. Each quality enriches the experience you bring to clients, building not only your brand but a reputation that lasts.

Who is your ideal client or what sort of characteristics would make someone an ideal client for you?

An ideal client would be someone who’s open to collaboration, willing to trust the process, and excited about trying new things. They don’t have to know exactly what they want, but they’re willing to communicate honestly about their preferences, lifestyle, and how much time they want to put into styling.

A great client is also someone who values self-care and sees their hair as part of expressing themselves. They’re open to learning about maintaining their look and are receptive to tips on how to keep their hair healthy and vibrant between appointments.

Finally, my ideal client would bring their individuality to the chair, inspiring us both to create something that truly feels like them. This makes every appointment feel fresh and keeps my creativity alive too.
