Meet Deon Lucas

Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Deon Lucas. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.

Hi Deon , really happy you were able to join us today and we’re looking forward to sharing your story and insights with our readers. Let’s start with the heart of it all – purpose. How did you find your purpose?

Finding my purpose was the benefit of a culmination of events, experiences, and insight. The journey that I’m currently on all started as a kid in the 90s, as I was raised by parents that really valued the concept of thrifting. I love collecting interestingly odd and vintage items from all over the world. It’s fascinating how one man’s trash can truly be another man’s treasure. This notion has become a mantra for my life. As an actor and fashion enthusiast, I’ve always been attracted to vintage Hollywood and all that it entails. When I would audition for roles, I’d always make sure that I created a unique character look that I owned to help get into character. Other industry friends started requesting that I style them for gigs while industry execs would hire me to style their project.
The pandemic and the writers strike let me know that no job is secure. I opened up my very own brick and mortar retail thrift store in Sherman Oaks called Lucas Rags N Riches. This is where fashion and entertainment meets art. We host Champagne N Shop parties throughout the year. I know that I’ve found my purpose because God contines to bless me in my pursuit of happiness!

Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?

I opened Lucas Rags N Riches, a Sherman Oaks thrift boutique, in March of 2023. We’re more than a thrift store; sort of a fashionable event space. I created the layout with interactive energy at the forefront. I wanted people to be able to have a unique and catered shopping experience. We have a free play arcade game, seating to lounge, and movie projector playing vintage music videos. Whether you’re into clothes or collectibles, there’s some hidden gems awaiting your discovery at Lucas Rags N Riches.

Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?

Three qualities that were probably the most impactful are; my passion for fashion, ambition, and spiritually.
There’s plenty of creatives in the fashion industry and I knew from early on that something had to set me apart from the rest. I have a very keen eye for anything fashion. I’ve studied fabrics, stitching, designers, and trends well enough to be able to spot something a mile away. Thrifting is a job that doesn’t always feel like work. My ambition definitely aids my work ethic and me desire to succeed at anything I do. Maybe it’s the Cancerian crab in me, because once I get my claws onto something, it’s difficult to let go. None of this would be possible if not for my spiritually and the blessings of God.
My advice to those early in their journeys would be to have system, order, and structure. Don’t try to “figure things out as you go along”. Have a plan, but be willing to pivot when needed. Keep God close and use your spirit as the guiding light along your journey.

Before we go, maybe you can tell us a bit about your parents and what you feel was the most impactful thing they did for you?

The most important thing my parents did for me was to teach me how to fish, figuratively, instead of just giving me fish. They taught me to think for myself and to be good to others while always putting my best foot forward. Those life lessons stuck with me.
