Meet Deonte Finch

We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Deonte Finch a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.

Alright, so we’re so thrilled to have Deonte with us today – welcome and maybe we can jump right into it with a question about one of your qualities that we most admire. How did you develop your work ethic? Where do you think you get it from?

I believe my work ethic is a collective form a few sources. The first source my mother. I always remember my mother working hard, staying gainfully employed and finding multiple sources of income. My mother birthed me at 14 years old and that did not slow her down for having good work ethic. She has gone on to get multiple degrees and is now a registered nurse, still working hard till this day. In my opinion, you can’t teach work ethic, it is a choice. I chose not to settle for what is given to me and capitalize on opportunities presented. Motivation to my work ethic has mainly been my family. My family has grown over my working years. It has been my goal to be a provider and have my income keep up with my family as I am married with nine children. This has pushed me to find more sources of income and to keep working hard at archiving my goals.

Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?

My journey has been on full of perseverance. Being born and raised in Flint, MI., opportunities did not come knocking. I had to go outside and figure it out. This included paying attention to what works for me and building upon those strengths. I learned that I had to look outside the box and my surroundings to find success. On my way, I made a lot of mistakes and had failures. I learned the first step in success in taking that first step. If I didn’t try something new, I would not have given myself the opportunity to fail. Everything will not work and that is okay. In the mist of the failures I learned a lot due to them. Resilience is one of my biggest lessons. I have started over with nothing a few times. As long as I keep trying I will find success in something. I started off putting in work before I was old enough to have a real job. Washing cars, raking leaves to shoveling snow, I was always willing to work. My first real job was in fast food, then warehouse jobs before I found the labors union, local 1075 in Flint, MI. Work was strenuous and I worked in the field for years before I took a leap and got into telecommunications. Telecom work got me traveling the country and experiencing new things. Being in telecom have me now living in Las Vegas. I still do telecom work to this day, I am also now in the electrician union, IBEW local 357. I am furthering my acting career and started a consulting firm, D. Finch Consulting.in 2024. Already experienced success the same year with my wife Kristal winning her election and becoming a judge in Las Vegas.

Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?

I acquired a few skills, qualities and areas of knowledge throughout my journey. The three that have been the most impactful is resilience, fearlessness and creativity. Resilience is a quality I needed to survive. Without this skill I would have given up many times. This is what was required to fight trough the adversity and come out stronger on the other side. You may take losses and find yourself at the bottom, but if you don’t give up, you grow. Fearlessness is a trait I developed to not become complacent. Being complacent pauses you wherever you are. Fear keeps you from taking a leap of faith but taking that leap is the only way you can experience a different level. Fear is what keeps you from chasing your dreams. Over 90% of the the tings you fear never come true. Creativity is what has driven me the most. I have always had a burning desire to create. From drawing, to music to film, being able to be apart of the arts has always giving me life. I started off drawing characters and creating my own comic books. In school, I took theater class and visual communications, where I learned the basics of of photography and videography. I started recording and producing music around 2006 During this time I found the stage to perform my music. In 2022 I got into acting classes and began booking film gigs. About six months later I found my way back to the stage as I was cast in the theater production, BattleBots Destruct-A-Thon. During with my time with the production, I performed in over 300 live shows. Creativity is crucial to me expressing myself and has lead to great experiences in my life. I continue to book acting gigs in film and theater.

All the wisdom you’ve shared today is sincerely appreciated. Before we go, can you tell us about the main challenge you are currently facing?

One of my biggest obstacles is getting to the next level in my entertainment career. There are levels to this industry, with the success I did find, I am striving to experiencing more. I had to start somewhere and I’m grateful for the priceless experience I acquired. After being involved in over 50 combined film and theater projects, my sights are now also set on voice acting. The hurdle that is also apart of that is getting good representation in a agent. To resolve this issue, I have began to submit to different agencies. My next challenge will be making the right decision. I am looking forward to the new heights I know it will take me.
