Meet Derek Gallanosa

Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Derek Gallanosa. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.

Alright, so we’re so thrilled to have Derek with us today – welcome and maybe we can jump right into it with a question about one of your qualities that we most admire. How did you develop your work ethic? Where do you think you get it from?

Growing up I watched a lot of sports and followed athletes both on and off the court. Whether it was Jordan, Kobe, or Tiger, they all had intense work ethic. I carried that mentality over to my professional side trying to be the best Brewer I could and I think it has paid off. Whenever I give advice to younger professionals, I mention that having a high work ethic, which is completely up to them, is a way to open up more opportunities for your career.

Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?

Located in the middle of the North Park neighborhood of San Diego, GOAL. Brewing is a small batch independent/minority/woman owned brewery that specializes in Lagers, IPAs, Fruited Sours, and Stouts…basically all the popular styles of beers. Since our opening last year, we have gone on to win multiple medals through competition and high level recognition from our peers and media, both locally and nationally. We are currently the Best New Brewery in San Diego Magazine, San Diego Beer News, VinePair, and Hop Culture. I was also named the National Brewer of the Year by VinePair, the country’s most popular beverage industry website, where I traveled to New York City to accept their award.

I produce all the beer, split marketing duties, as well as sell and deliver products to local accounts. Brewing feeds my creative needs and the sales/marketing helps increase my managerial skill set.

There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?

As mentioned before, work ethic is the foundation of success in my opinion. After that, attention to detail and precision will set yourself apart from your colleagues. Don’t take short cuts, that’s for the people just working for a paycheck and have no desire to excel at their profession.

Who has been most helpful in helping you overcome challenges or build and develop the essential skills, qualities or knowledge you needed to be successful?

I gain knowledge/skills by trying beers from other breweries I find talented as well as podcasts and magazines. The information to make yourself a better person/professional is out there, you just have to put in the effort to absorb it.
