We were lucky to catch up with Derek Garcia recently and have shared our conversation below.
Derek, so great to be with you and I think a lot of folks are going to benefit from hearing your story and lessons and wisdom. Imposter Syndrome is something that we know how words to describe, but it’s something that has held people back forever and so we’re really interested to hear about your story and how you overcame imposter syndrome.
I think everyone in their own way encounters imposter syndrome to some degree at one or multiple points in their life. It is evolving as well as we grow I feel. Meaning, initially when you are young it can be a fear of not being good enough, lack of confidence, and lack of self image, you tend to be too naive and ignorant to what you do not know . Then, as you age, it becomes and you have skin in the game, your experience and knowledge can lead you to believe that you should be more successful than what you actually are. Causing you to feel desperate to make something work and unable to as if you cannot get your head above water. It causes you to ignore the triumphs you have achieved. Overcoming this, in my opinion, is a mindset of continuous learning. Sometimes, that means learning something completely different to change your perspective that can help unlock the next stages in your life. Remaining curious about life is an important part of this.
Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?
Up until recently I have been primarily focused on a Photography business called Links Productions LLC. Specializing in Portrait Photography such as families, couples, small events, and weddings it has been a great experiment in a way to understand business better and see if I can make anything of it. I have photographer many individuals and am fulfilled knowing that some of those photos have been printed and will be with those individuals for majority of their life.
I have started another venture called RevOps Initiative. Specializing in mapping businesses for the purpose of uncovering areas of opportunity from a Revenue Operations perspective. This stems from my expertise in Revenue Operations in multi-million dollar companies. Basically, I hope to help various business operators scale, become more efficient, and ultimately drive more revenue.
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
Curiosity, commitment, confidence. The three C’s if you will is something I always come back to.
Curiosity – though it comes naturally to some more than others it can be fostered by asking “I wonder..” I wonder why, I wonder if, I wonder when, etc. All questions that spark curiosity to learn.
Commitment – becoming good at anything requires a commitment to do the thing you are doing. Commitment to drive it forward and see it through to the end without quitting. To foster this, avoid distractions, find joy in whatever you are doing, and get used to committing even when it is hard, uncertain, or seemingly impossible.
Confidence – the world is full of people that are going to doubt you, tear you down, or say why you cannot do something. You do not need to do the same thing to yourself. You need to have confidence in your abilities to succeed. Confidence that you can figure it out. Foster this by reminding yourself every morning that you are worthy, listen to motivational speeches, reward yourself for the little wins even if that means you took one step forward.
Okay, so before we go we always love to ask if you are looking for folks to partner or collaborate with?
